The old high school in Millbrook had a reputation, but not for ghosts. It was just old, with creaky floors and drafty windows. I’d never believed in the rumors, not even when my friend Jake swore he saw a figure on the football field at dusk. I was a skeptic, until that Tuesday morning.

I was early for my English class, but Mr. Henderson had asked me to drop off a textbook to Mrs. Alvarez in room 204. I said sure, mostly to kill time. I walked down the main staircase, my footsteps echoing on the worn marble. The hallway was quiet, the only sound a distant hum from the boiler room. As I passed room 112, I saw three of my friends—Dani, Marcus, and Lily—huddled around a desk, deep in conversation. Dani caught my eye and waved. ‘Hey, Sam!’ she called. I waved back and said, ‘Hey, what’s up?’ They smiled and turned back to their discussion.

I delivered the book to Mrs. Alvarez, who was arranging papers. She thanked me, and I had a few minutes before the bell. I decided to stop by room 112 again to chat with my friends. When I reached the doorway, the room was empty. The desks were neat, the chairs tucked in. But I could still hear their voices—Dani’s laughter, Marcus’s low tone, Lily’s excited chatter. They were coming from the empty space, layered and faint.

I felt a chill crawl up my spine. I stepped inside, my voice barely a whisper. ‘Is anyone in here?’ The talking stopped instantly. The silence that followed was heavy, pressing on my ears. I took a breath and said louder, ‘Dani? Marcus? You guys messing with me?’ No response. The air felt cold, and the room seemed darker than the hallway, as if the light was being swallowed.

I turned to leave, but the door slammed shut. I yanked it, but it was stuck. Panic rose in my chest. Then I heard a voice—not my friends’, but a raspy whisper from behind me. ‘We were waiting for you.’ I spun around. The room was still empty, but the voices returned, now clear and overlapping, speaking in unison. ‘You saw us. You heard us. Now you’re one of us.’

I pressed my palms against the door, trying to force it open. The voices grew louder, echoing off the walls. I felt a cold hand on my shoulder, but when I looked, nothing was there. The whispers turned into a cacophony, chanting my name. ‘Sam… Sam… Sam…’ I squeezed my eyes shut, covering my ears, but the sound was inside my head.

Suddenly, the door flung open. I stumbled into the hallway, gasping for air. The bell rang, and students began to fill the corridor, chattering. I looked back at room 112. Dani, Marcus, and Lily were standing inside, laughing. ‘Hey, Sam! Where’d you go?’ Dani asked. ‘We were just here.’ I stared at them. They were exactly as I’d first seen them. But I knew that wasn’t true. They had not been there when I returned. And now, as I watched, they seemed to flicker, like a bad signal. Then they were solid again, but their smiles were too wide.

I walked away, my heart pounding. I haven’t told anyone what happened, because who would believe me? But now, when I pass room 112, I sometimes see them inside—my friends—and they wave at me. But I never wave back. I don’t want to be one of them.
