In the summer of 2006, I lived in a creaky old farmhouse on the outskirts of Nowhere, Nebraska. My brother Kevin and I were sprawled on the living room floor, dueling with our Pokemon cards, when a low rumble shook the windows. I thought it was thunder, but the sky was clear. Then I heard our dog, Buster, barking frantically from the backyard. His barks turned into wild yelps, and then a piercing howl that made my blood run cold.

I jumped to my feet, but Kevin grabbed my arm. ‘Don’t,’ he whispered, his eyes wide. ‘Something’s out there.’ We listened as Buster’s howls grew more desperate, then abruptly stopped. The silence that followed was worse. A heavy footstep, like a boulder slamming into the earth, echoed from the yard. Then another, closer. The floorboards vibrated under my feet, and the windows rattled as if something massive was brushing against the house.

I wanted to run to the back door to see if Buster was okay, but Kevin held me back. ‘It’s not a bear,’ he said, his voice shaking. ‘Bears don’t move like that.’ We crouched behind the sofa, peering through the front window. The porch light cast a dim glow, and I saw a shape—tall, vaguely humanoid but broader, with long arms that hung almost to the ground. It paused, sniffing the air, then lumbered toward the barn. Each step made the ground tremble, and I could see deep impressions in the dirt where its feet fell.

I thought of Buster, who had been our loyal companion for six years. I prayed he had escaped, but I was too terrified to open the door. The creature disappeared into the darkness of the field, and the tremors slowly faded. Kevin and I stayed frozen for hours until dawn broke, too scared to move or speak.

The next morning, I called for Buster, my voice cracking. To my relief, he came running from the tall grass, his tail wagging, but his fur was matted with something dark and sticky. He had a deep gash on his hind leg, and he wouldn’t go near the barn. When I walked to the back of the property, I found the ground torn up as if a small truck had driven through, and in the center of the destruction lay a single, huge footprint—three toes, five feet long, with claw marks that had dug into the soil.

We never saw the creature again, but every night since, I hear that heavy thudding outside my window, and the ground shakes just enough to remind me that some things are too big to be ignored.
