Eight months had passed since we moved into the old farmhouse on the edge of the marsh. My younger brother and I were camped out on the pull-out sofa in the den because our shared bedroom had become a graveyard of unpacked boxes and discarded clothes. The house groaned with the weight of its age, and the floorboards complained with every step.

That night, I was reading as usual, a dog-eared mystery novel, when a deep unease settled over me. It was like the air had thickened, and the shadows in the corners seemed to lean closer. I tried to dismiss it, but the feeling clung to me like damp fog. I finally put the book aside, switched off the lamp, and lay on the sofa, not bothering with the covers.

I lay in the dark, the silence pressing in. The only sound was the slow creak of the house settling. I was just dozing off when I heard it: a shuffling sound, like bare feet dragging across the wooden floor. It came from behind the sofa, near the wall. I twisted around, my heart hammering, but there was nothing. Just the faint moonlight filtering through the dusty curtains.

I told myself it was the old tomcat, but the sound had been too heavy, too deliberate. I faced the ceiling again, forcing my eyes shut. Then, from the direction of the hallway, a voice whispered, ‘Remember.’ It was low, guttural, like a man who had been silent for decades.

A heavy sigh followed, and then the scuffling resumed, moving away. I lay frozen, my limbs leaden. I couldn’t even lift my head to look. The minutes stretched into an eternity. When I finally mustered the courage to sit up, the room was empty, but I felt a lingering presence.

I didn’t sleep that night. When dawn broke, I told my brother we were moving our stuff into the bedroom. But the fear followed me. Over the next weeks, the house continued its strange behavior. Doors creaked open on their own. I’d find muddy footprints on the floor that led nowhere. And every so often, I’d catch that whisper again, ‘Remember.’

One evening, I was in the basement, searching for a box of winter clothes, when I noticed a loose floorboard near the old boiler. Curious, I pried it up. Beneath it lay a tarnished locket, a faded photograph, and a yellowed letter. The photograph showed a young woman with a stern face, and on the back was written, ‘Margaret, 1923.’ The letter, barely legible, was from a man named Elias, confessing to a crime he couldn’t name.

As I read, the room grew cold. I realized the whisper wasn’t a threat—it was a plea. The house was trying to remember, to confess. And now that I had uncovered its secret, it grew quiet. But every night, as I lay in bed, I hear the scuffling feet, and the voice says, ‘Remember.’ I’ve started keeping a journal, writing down everything I hear. Because some memories are too heavy to bury, and they will find a way to surface, even through the floorboards of an old farmhouse.
