The Message in the Rain

My wife and I were driving home through a heavy storm after visiting our old college town. The windshield wipers beat a steady rhythm as we spoke about life and what might come after. We had both lost parents in recent years, and our talk was gentle and wondering, not sad.

Suddenly, the radio, which had been playing soft music, crackled and went silent. Then, a single, clear note, like a bell, rang from the speakers. It was not part of any song. The sound hung in the air between us, calm and certain.

At that exact moment, the downpour lessened to a drizzle and a break in the clouds revealed a single bright star. We looked at each other, not needing to speak. We both felt it was a sign, a quiet hello from far away. It was a comfort that has stayed with me ever since.
