I never expected to find a community that would believe me. After years of being told I was crazy, of being pitied and dismissed, I had given up on sharing my experiences. But then I stumbled upon the YGS website, and for the first time, I felt a glimmer of hope. The stories I read were strange, unsettling, and yet, they resonated with a truth I recognized. So, I decided to share my own, hoping that someone, anyone, would understand.
This is a story about my first companion, a cat I named Ninja. He was a sleek black creature with piercing yellow eyes that seemed to see right through you. But it wasn’t his appearance that made him special; it was his uncanny intelligence. He would watch me with an intensity that was almost human, his head tilting as if he understood every word I said. And in a way, I think he did.
The events I’m about to describe took place in the summer of 2019, when I moved into a small apartment in the outskirts of a town called Millbrook. The apartment was cheap, and the landlord was eager to rent it out quickly, which should have been my first warning. But I was desperate for a place, and the building had a certain charm, with its old brick facade and creaky wooden floors.
From the moment I stepped inside, Ninja was uneasy. He would prowl the hallways, his tail flicking nervously, and stare at a corner in the living room where nothing seemed to be. I dismissed it as new surroundings, but as days passed, his behavior grew more peculiar. He would hiss at the air, flattening his ears against his head, and then scamper away as if fleeing from an unseen pursuer.
I started to notice things myself. Little things: the way the shadows seemed to shift when I wasn’t looking, a faint whispering that I could almost hear at night, and an inexplicable chill that would sometimes descend upon the room. I rationalized it away, blaming the old pipes and my overactive imagination. But Ninja knew better.
One night, I woke to find Ninja standing on my chest, his eyes glowing in the darkness. He was staring intently at the bedroom door, his fur bristling. I glanced over, and for a split second, I thought I saw a figure standing there—a tall, gaunt shape with long, thin arms. But when I blinked, it was gone. My heart raced, and I whispered to Ninja, ‘What is it, boy?’ He let out a low growl, something I had never heard from him before.
The strange occurrences escalated. I would find my belongings moved, as if someone had been rifling through them. I would hear footsteps in the hallway when I was alone. And always, Ninja would be watching, his eyes tracking something I couldn’t see. I began to feel a presence, a malevolent force that seemed to be drawing closer.
I tried to contact the landlord, but he was evasive, deflecting my questions. I researched the building’s history, but found nothing. I even considered moving, but my lease was binding, and I had no money to break it. So I stayed, hoping it would pass.
Then came the night that changed everything. I was sitting on the couch, Ninja curled at my feet, when the power went out. A thick silence enveloped the room, broken only by the sound of my own breathing. I reached for my phone, but the screen was black, dead. I was plunged into an oppressive darkness.
Suddenly, Ninja let out a blood-curdling yowl and launched himself at something I couldn’t see. He struggled in midair, as if fighting an invisible assailant. I cried out, trying to reach him, but my limbs felt heavy, frozen. I watched in horror as Ninja was flung against the wall with a sickening thud, then slumped to the floor motionless.
I rushed to him, cradling his limp body. He was still warm, but his eyes were closed, and his breathing was shallow. I felt a wave of despair wash over me. In that moment, I realized I had been living in a haunted place, and Ninja had been trying to protect me from something I could not comprehend.
As the lights flickered back on, I saw Ninja’s paw twitch. He was alive, but barely. I called an emergency vet and stayed by his side for days. He eventually recovered, but he was never the same. He became withdrawn, skittish, and would avoid the apartment altogether, preferring to stay outside.
The haunting seemed to have ceased after that night, as if the entity had been satisfied with what it had done. But I will never forget the look of terror in Ninja’s eyes, nor the feeling that something sinister was watching me, waiting. I moved out soon after, and Ninja and I never spoke of that night again. But sometimes, in the quiet moments, I catch him staring at me with a knowing look, and I wonder if he sees something I cannot.
