The humid August air hung thick and still as Maya and Chloe sprawled on the Persian rug in the attic room of Chloe’s ancestral home. Outside, the sprawling estate was swallowed by an unnatural twilight, the sky bruised with shades of violet and indigo. A sudden, pulsing luminescence, like an underwater aurora, painted the dense forest bordering the property. It wasn’t lightning; there was no accompanying thunder, only an eerie silence that pressed in on their eardrums. Intrigued, they moved to the dormer window, its glass cool against their foreheads.

Through the skeletal branches of the ancient oaks, three distinct points of light danced. They were small, impossibly so, and moved with a liquid grace that defied any known craft. They drifted, then hovered, then darted with impossible speed, tracing invisible patterns against the darkening woods. Maya, ever the pragmatist, muttered, “What even is that? It’s too small for a drone, and it’s not a plane. It just… vanished behind those pines.”

Chloe, whose family had resided on this land for generations, her mind steeped in local folklore and hushed family histories, chewed on her lip. “My grandmother used to tell stories… about lights that weren’t lights. About… blooms of trapped starlight. She called them Lumina.” Maya scoffed, but the image of the lights dissolving behind the thick pines, leaving no trace, gnawed at her. Lumina. The word felt ancient and chilling.

Panic began to bloom in Maya’s chest, cold and sharp. Chloe, seeing her friend’s growing terror, grabbed her hand. “We should tell my parents,” she whispered, her voice trembling. They roused Chloe’s father, a stoic man who dismissed their sighting with a wave of his hand, attributing it to fireflies or overactive imaginations. He ushered them back to their room, a grand, drafty space filled with antique furniture that seemed to watch them. Defeated and terrified, they retreated to the perceived safety of the large four-poster bed, pulling the heavy quilt over their heads until only their eyes peeked out, scanning the oppressive darkness.

The next morning, the woods looked innocuous, bathed in ordinary sunlight. Their tale, however, met with polite skepticism from classmates and bemused tolerance from adults. Three days passed, each dawn bringing a fragile sense of normalcy. But on the fourth night, the pulsing luminescence returned, brighter this time, closer. It seeped through the very walls of the house, casting an unearthly glow upon Chloe’s face as she stared, wide-eyed, from the attic window. Maya felt a prickling sensation on her skin, a hum resonating deep within her bones. This time, the Lumina didn’t retreat; they seemed to be… blooming.
