At seventeen, Mara had grown accustomed to the weight of unseen things. Her family called it imagination; her pastor called it a gift. She called it a nuisance. But when the dreams began, they were different—vivid, tactile, and impossible to shake. The man appeared in her sleep, his jet-black hair tied back, his lime-green eyes glowing like swamp fire. He wore a crimson shirt under a black leather jacket, and his presence filled her cramped bedroom with a chill that clung to the walls long after she woke.

At first, he was only a watcher, standing at the edge of her dreams, his lips curved in a knowing smile. Then he started speaking, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through her bones. ‘Mara,’ he would say, her name rolling off his tongue like a secret. She tried to ignore him, to write him off as a figment of stress and late-night horror movies. But then she heard him while awake—a whisper in the empty hallway, a murmur in the hum of the refrigerator. And always, that cold, crawling sensation, as if he were breathing down her neck.

She started journaling, hoping to exorcise him onto paper. But each entry felt like an invitation. The ink seemed to darken, the words rearranging themselves into warnings. One night, she jotted down a description and noticed a strange symbol she hadn’t drawn—a twisted spiral, like a hornet’s nest. She sketched it in the margins, and the temperature in her room plummeted. Her breath fogged, and she could feel him behind her, his hands dangerously close to her shoulders.

That’s when the dreams turned predatory. He would approach her bed in the dreamscape, his touch cold and invasive, his eyes burning with an unholy hunger. She would wake gasping, drenched in sweat, the lingering sensation of his fingers on her skin. The second time he tried to end her, he lunged with a blade that gleamed like polished obsidian. Desperate, she screamed the name of Jesus, and he recoiled, his skin sizzling as if scorched. He vanished, but the rage in his eyes left a scar on her waking mind.

Determined to understand, Mara delved into old texts, seeking signs of such a being. In a dusty volume of folklore, she found a description: a demon of lust and obsession, known as the Serpent of the Garden, who preyed on the faithful. His eyes were described as ‘the green of unripe fruit,’ and his attire as ‘the colors of blood and ash.’ The book spoke of a protection ritual, using salt and a verse from the Book of Psalms. Mara prepared her room, drawing a circle of salt around her bed and reciting scripture each night.

But the ritual only seemed to anger him. In her dreams, he would circle the salt, laughing, his form flickering like a bad signal. ‘You think your little prayers can bind me?’ he hissed. ‘I have watched you since you were a child, waiting for your doubt to ripen.’ Mara realized he fed on her fear, on the cracks in her faith. She began to pray not for protection, but for understanding, asking God to reveal his true nature.

One night, she dreamed of a door—a massive iron door in a stone wall. He stood before it, beckoning. ‘Open it, and you will know all,’ he said. She approached, her hand trembling on the cold metal. He smiled, a predator’s grin. But she didn’t open it. Instead, she turned, facing him with a courage she didn’t know she had. ‘You are not my God,’ she said, ‘and you have no power over me.’

He shrieked, his form bursting into a swarm of flies, and the door dissolved into mist. Mara woke to the sound of shattered glass—a mirror in her room had cracked, the glass splintered in the shape of the spiral symbol. But the cold presence was gone, replaced by a stillness that felt almost holy. She knew he was still out there, lurking, waiting for her to weaken. But she also knew she had a name for him now, and a story to tell. She would not let the lime-eyed stranger own her nights.
