Marta had always found comfort in the old barn at the edge of her family’s property. It was a place she’d go to think, to escape the constant chatter of her six siblings, and to watch the fireflies blink in the dusk. The night before last, after a long day of canning tomatoes, she’d gone to bed at midnight, her limbs heavy with exhaustion. She’d fallen asleep almost immediately, her dreams filled with the tangy scent of simmering sauce and the rhythmic thud of the wooden spoon against the pot.

Then, without warning, she was awake. The darkness of her room was absolute, the silence so deep it seemed to have weight. And there was something on her. A pressure, firm and warm, pressed against her lips, as if someone were kissing her. Her first instinct was to scream, but she couldn’t move. A heavy weight pinned her to the mattress, her arms and legs feeling like they were filled with lead. A tingling sensation, like a low-voltage current, raced from her scalp down to her toes, making her skin prickle and her hair stand on end.

Marta’s heart hammered against her ribs, but a strange calm settled over her. The feeling wasn’t malevolent; it was more like being enveloped in a heavy blanket. She tried to speak, to ask who was there, but her jaw wouldn’t move. The pressure on her lips intensified, and she felt a wave of energy wash over her, as if someone were breathing into her, filling her lungs with something heady and dark.

She remembered the stories her grandmother used to tell about the spirits that lingered in the fields, the ones who’d been lost to the harvests long ago. They were said to visit the living, seeking warmth, seeking connection. Was this one of them? Marta tried to focus, to push back against the suffocating embrace. In her mind, she shouted, ‘Stop!’ And as quickly as it had begun, the pressure lifted. The weight vanished, and the tingling receded like a tide pulling back from the shore.

She gasped, her body trembling, and sat up, her eyes straining to see in the dark. The clock on her nightstand glowed: 12:43 AM. She’d been asleep for only forty-three minutes, but it felt like hours. Her lips still tingled, and she touched them with her fingers, half-expecting to feel something there. She flicked on the lamp, and the warm glow chased away the shadows, but not the feeling that she was not alone.

Marta didn’t sleep the rest of the night. She sat on her bed, knees drawn to her chest, staring at the door. She wanted to think it was a dream, a vivid hallucination brought on by exhaustion. But the memory was too sharp, too physical. The next day, she avoided the barn, staying close to the house, helping her mother with chores. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was waiting for her, something that had been watching her for a long time.

That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the sky turned a bruise purple, Marta stood at the edge of the field, looking at the barn. The door was slightly ajar, a sliver of darkness yawning like a hungry mouth. She remembered the stories of the lost ones, the ones who’d wandered into the tall grass and never come back. She’d always thought they were just tales to scare children, but now she wondered.

She took a step forward, then stopped. The air was still, but she felt a faint breeze brush past her, as if something had rushed by. And on her lips, she felt the ghost of that pressure again, a whisper of a touch. Marta turned and walked back to the house, her heart pounding, but she knew it was only a matter of time before the barn called to her again. And maybe, this time, she would answer.
