The old textile mill creaked and groaned around Elias like a dying beast. Dust motes danced in the infrequent shafts of moonlight piercing the grimy factory windows, illuminating a scene of decay and disuse. He was the only one left, the sole caretaker tasked with keeping the colossal, rusting machinery from completely succumbing to the damp. Tonight, however, the familiar symphony of metallic sighs and sighs of wind felt different, heavier. A knot of unease tightened in his stomach as he made his way towards the auxiliary washroom, a small, dilapidated structure tacked onto the far end of the main floor, smelling perpetually of mildew and stale oil.

He pushed open the heavy, unpainted door, the hinges protesting with a shriek that made him jump. Inside, the air was thick and cloying. He locked the outer door, a necessary precaution against the vagrant teenagers who sometimes used the mill as a shelter. Then, he slid the bolt on the inner door of the stall, a thin piece of metal that offered little more than psychological comfort. He settled onto the cold porcelain, the silence pressing in on him. It was then he saw it. Not a shadow, not a trick of the light, but a *presence*. A smear of impossible darkness coalesced in the corner of his eye, a shape that defied definition, moving with a speed that was both unnatural and utterly terrifying. It flowed, it writhed, it was *there*, then *not there*, across the flimsy partition of the stall.

Elias froze, his breath catching in his throat. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drummer in the sudden, absolute quiet. His mind raced, trying to rationalize, to find a logical explanation, but the primal fear that clawed at him dismissed reason. It wasn’t fatigue, it wasn’t imagination. It was real, and it was in the confined space with him. The urge to flee was overwhelming. He fumbled with his trousers, his hands slick with sweat, the cool air of the washroom suddenly feeling like ice against his skin. He didn’t bother with the locks. He burst through the outer door, the night air a shock against his face, and ran. He didn’t stop until he was well past the rusted gates of the mill, the phantom movement seared into his vision, the suffocating presence clinging to him long after he left the building behind.
