The old house on Blackwood Lane always felt too large for its occupants. Elias and his younger brother, Finn, shared a room that felt perpetually cold, even in the height of summer. Their parents, struggling to make ends meet, had bought the dilapidated Victorian for a song, unaware of the chill that clung to its walls, a chill that had nothing to do with the drafty windows. The hallway connecting the two small bedrooms of the children felt like a gaping maw, always darker than the rooms themselves.

One sweltering August night, Elias woke abruptly. The air was thick with the cloying scent of dust and something else, something faintly metallic. His bedroom door, usually kept shut tight by a warped jamb, stood ajar. Through the sliver of darkness, he saw a small figure standing in the hallway. It was a girl, no older than Finn, clad in a moth-eaten, pale yellow nightgown that seemed to absorb what little light there was. Elias, groggy from sleep, assumed it was Finn, who had a habit of wandering in his sleep. He was about to call out, to gently nudge his brother back to bed, when he heard Finn’s soft, even breathing from their shared mattress.

His blood turned to ice. The figure in the hallway didn’t move. It just stood there, its face obscured by a curtain of dark, stringy hair. Elias stared, frozen, his heart hammering against his ribs. The silence stretched, taut and suffocating. Then, the girl slowly turned her head, and Elias glimpsed eyes that were ancient and hollow, like empty sockets. A guttural shriek, ripped from his very core, tore through the night. The sound jolted his parents awake. They rushed in, finding Elias hyperventilating, pointing a trembling finger at the empty hallway. “A girl! There was a girl!” he choked out. His father, weary and dismissive, attributed it to a nightmare, a bad dream born of the oppressive heat. Elias, though unconvinced, eventually succumbed to exhaustion, the image of the girl in the moth-eaten nightgown seared into his mind.
