When I was seven, we lived in a crooked farmhouse on the edge of the Thornwood, a forest so dense that sunlight barely touched its floor. My father had inherited it from a great-uncle who had vanished decades ago, and though my mother hated the isolation, my younger brother, Sam, and I loved the endless woods.

One autumn night, a storm knocked out the power. We huddled in my parents’ bedroom, lit by a single oil lamp, while wind rattled the windows. My older sister, Claire, had just finished telling a ghost story, and Sam was pretending to be braver than he was. I was half-asleep when Claire suddenly went rigid. ‘What is that?’ she whispered, pointing at the hallway.

Through the open door, we saw a pale, translucent shape drift past, heading from Sam’s room toward the stairs. It was tall, with a featureless face and long arms that hung too low. My mother clutched Sam, her knuckles white, but she didn’t scream. The figure moved in a slow, deliberate glide, and at its chest, a faint golden light pulsed like a lantern.

It passed the doorway and vanished down the stairwell. We waited, breath held. Then it reappeared, drifting back the same way, its glow dimmer. It did this three times, each pass a little slower, until it stopped at Sam’s threshold. I thought I saw it turn its head toward us, and then it dissolved into a fine mist.

For weeks, Sam refused to enter his room alone. He said he saw a man with a lantern in his dreams, a man who told him, ‘The house is safe now, but you must never light a candle after midnight.’ My mother, though terrified, believed it was a guardian. She said the figure reminded her of a story our great-uncle used to tell about a ‘lantern keeper’ who watched over lost travelers in the Thornwood.

Years later, when we moved away, the new owners discovered a hidden passage in the attic. Behind it was a journal, wrapped in oilcloth, written by that same great-uncle. The last entry read: ‘I have found the keeper. He asks for a bargain. He will protect the family, but in return, I must stay in the wood, forever.’ The page after was blank, save for a patch of dried blood.

I think back to that night, to the figure’s patient pacing, and I realize: it wasn’t flying. It was walking a boundary, marking a line. And when it entered Sam’s room, it was sealing a deal that had been made before we were born. Now, whenever I see a candle flicker unlit, I wonder if the keeper is still keeping his promise—or if he’s waiting for me to take my great-uncle’s place.
