The old farmhouse sat at the edge of a vast, whispering cornfield, its silhouette a dark smudge against the bruised twilight sky. Inside, three sisters—Marta, the eldest, practical and stern; Clara, the middle, dreamy and imaginative; and young Rosie, barely ten, with wide, trusting eyes—were settling in for the night. Their mother, Elena, had driven to the city for a funeral, leaving them alone for the first time. The air was thick with the smell of dust and old wood, and the only light came from a single kerosene lamp that cast long, dancing shadows on the walls.

They had just drifted off to sleep when the clock in the hallway began to chime midnight. The sound was swallowed by a sudden, violent noise from outside—a cacophony of shouts, clanging metal, and laughter that seemed to come from everywhere at once. The sisters shot up in bed, their hearts racing. Clara whispered, ‘What is that? It sounds like a celebration.’ Rosie clutched her blanket, her small voice trembling, ‘Maybe it’s the new baby at the Schmidts’ farm next door. Mrs. Schmidt is due any day now.’

Marta, ever the pragmatist, lit the lamp and tiptoed to the window. Through the grimy glass, she could see a flickering orange glow emanating from the Schmidt’s barn, and the silhouettes of figures moving frantically within. ‘They must be having a party to welcome the child,’ she said, trying to sound calm, but her hands were shaking. The noise continued for fifteen minutes, then suddenly stopped, leaving an eerie silence that was more unsettling than the racket.

The sisters pulled the curtains closed and tried to sleep, but the silence was broken by a series of high-pitched, unnerving giggles that seemed to come from just outside their door. They huddled together, the lamp turned low, listening to the sound of bare feet padding across the wooden floor below. The giggles grew louder, then faded, then started again, until finally, at three in the morning, they ceased. The sisters exchanged terrified glances, but exhaustion claimed them, and they fell into a restless sleep.

The next morning, the sun rose over the cornfield, painting the world in shades of gold. The sisters, despite their fear, were excited. They had heard that when a baby is born, there are sweets and celebration. They dressed quickly and made the short walk across the dewy grass to the Schmidt farm. The yard was empty, but the barn door was ajar. They stepped inside, the smell of hay and manure strong. In the center, a single lantern hung from a beam, casting a weak, flickering light. There was no sign of Mrs. Schmidt, her husband, or any baby.

Marta, ever bold, called out, ‘Hello? Where’s the baby? We’ve come to congratulate you!’ The only response was a chorus of giggles, just like the ones from the night before. They echoed around the barn, seeming to come from every direction at once. A voice, raspy and ancient, spoke from the shadows: ‘The baby is not yet here. You must wait another week. As for the sweets… you know what to do.’

The sisters stood frozen, their blood turning to ice. They didn’t know what to do. They ran back to the farmhouse, their feet pounding on the earth, the laughter following them like a malevolent wind. They slammed the door and barricaded it with a chair. That night, they didn’t sleep. The lantern in the cornfield burned all through the dark hours, and the whispers of the corn seemed to carry the words: ‘Wait for the baby. Wait for the sweets.’ They knew, with a dread that settled in their bones, that they had stumbled into a ritual they didn’t understand, and the cornfield held secrets that would not let them go.
