In the autumn of 1987, my parents inherited a house from a distant aunt—a Victorian relic with a peeling yellow door that no one ever used. They rented it out to a young couple, the Harpers, who were newlyweds. My father gave them the keys to the front door and told them to make themselves at home for the weekend while they were away at a family reunion.

On the first night, around 2 AM, the Harpers were awakened by the unmistakable sound of the front door creaking open, followed by heavy footsteps on the hardwood floor of the hallway. The steps were slow, deliberate, as if the visitor was familiar with the house. They heard the shuffling of shoes on the old rug, then a pause, then more steps, heading toward the guest room. The husband, Tom, whispered to his wife, Sarah, ‘Maybe it’s the homeowners? They said they’d be back late.’ But the footsteps stopped right outside their door, and they heard a low, guttural breathing. Then, after a long silence, the steps retreated, and the front door slammed shut.

The next morning, the Harpers came down to breakfast, exhausted. They mentioned to my parents, who had just arrived, ‘You guys got in late last night, didn’t you? We heard you come in around 2.’ My parents exchanged bewildered glances. My mother said, ‘We only just pulled in an hour ago. We didn’t come by the house at all.’ Tom and Sarah’s faces went pale. They described the footsteps in detail—the heavy tread, the pause, the breathing. My father insisted that no one else had a key, but he noticed that the yellow door, which had been locked with a deadbolt, was now slightly ajar.

Over the next few weeks, the Harpers couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. They began to notice small things: a picture frame tilted, a book moved from the shelf, the faint smell of cigar smoke in the hallway. One night, Tom decided to stay up and confront whoever or whatever was lurking. He sat in the dark living room, waiting. At exactly 2 AM, the front door creaked open, and the footsteps began. But this time, they were faster, more frantic. Tom’s heart pounded as the steps approached the living room. He flicked on the flashlight, and for a split second, he saw a figure in the doorway—a tall, gaunt man with hollow eyes, wearing a moth-eaten suit. The figure vanished as the beam hit him, leaving behind a chill that clung to the room.

The Harpers moved out the next week, and my parents never rented the house again. But before they left, Sarah found an old photograph in a hidden drawer in the guest room. It was of a man in a suit, standing in front of the yellow door, with ‘Property of The Doran Estate’ written on the back. My father remembered the aunt who left him the house—she had a brother who had disappeared in the 1940s under mysterious circumstances. They say he was never found, but sometimes, on quiet autumn nights, you can still hear the front door open, and the footsteps walk the hallway, as if he’s still looking for a way out.

I never slept in that guest room again, and to this day, the yellow door remains locked. But every time I pass it, I swear I can hear a faint breathing from the other side.
