The old house on Maple Street had always felt like a living thing, its creaks and groans a language only my grandmother understood. After she passed, my mother inherited it, and we moved in, hoping to save money. But the house didn’t want us. I could feel it in the way the air thickened near the back rooms, in the way my little brother Todd refused to go near the cellar door. I was nineteen, doing online college, and Todd was twelve, struggling with his own online school. Mom worked late, so we were alone most days, and I became the unofficial guardian of our space.

I tried everything to keep the house’s presence at bay. I found a smooth, black stone at a flea market, the seller claiming it was a protective charm. I carried it everywhere, and each night before sleeping, I’d hold it and whisper into the dark, ‘You are not welcome here. This is our house now.’ For a few nights, it seemed to work. The creaking stopped, the shadows stayed put. But one morning, I woke to find the stone gone. I tore my bed apart, searched every corner, but it had vanished, leaving only a faint cold spot where it had lain.

Soon after, new things began. I’d hear a child’s laugh from Todd’s room when he wasn’t there, and the soft pad of bare feet on the floor above me. My laptop would flicker in the middle of lectures, the screen showing a distorted reflection of a face that wasn’t mine. Todd grew paler, saying he felt watched. Then, one night, I found Todd standing in the hallway, staring at the wall, whispering a string of numbers I didn’t recognize. When I snapped him out of it, he had no memory of it.

The climax came when I discovered a hidden door behind a loose panel in my closet. It led to a narrow staircase descending into a cold, earthen basement. At the bottom, in a rusted iron box, lay my missing stone—but it was cracked in two, and inside the crack was a tiny, desiccated finger bone. I understood then: the stone hadn’t been protecting me; it had been a talisman for the house, and I had been feeding it with my own fear. The house had been using me to get stronger.

I gathered the pieces and the bone, and with Todd and Mom, we performed a cleansing ritual, but it was too late. The house had consumed the stone’s energy, and now it was tethered to me. Every night, I hear its voice in the static of my laptop, and I see its hollow eyes in the reflection of the window. I know I can never fully leave, because it’s part of me now. And somewhere in the dark, I hear my own voice whisper back, ‘You are welcome here.’
