In the summer of 2019, I was a civilian contractor stationed at a remote research outpost on the island of Shikoku, Japan. The outpost was nestled in a dense forest, near a village that had long been abandoned after a series of unexplained disappearances. The locals, what few remained, spoke in hushed tones of the ‘Kage no Ki’ – the Shadow Tree – a gnarled, ancient tree that stood at the edge of the forest, its roots sprawling like grasping fingers. It was said that the tree was a gateway for spirits, and that disrespecting it would bring a curse upon you. I had heard these stories but dismissed them as superstition.

One windy night, I was walking my dog, a stray I had named Momo, around the perimeter of our compound. The wind howled through the trees, and the leaves rustled like whispers. Momo, usually obedient, suddenly tugged on the leash, pulling me toward the Shadow Tree. I resisted at first, but she was insistent, her ears flat against her head. Curious and a bit unnerved, I let her lead. As we approached, the air grew distinctly colder, and a strange static seemed to cling to my skin.

Momo sniffed the air and then, without warning, urinated on the tree’s exposed roots. I flinched, remembering the stories. ‘Sorry,’ I muttered, more to calm myself than anything. But it was too late. Momo let out a low growl, then bolted, dragging me back toward the compound. Her tail was tucked between her legs, and her fur stood on end. I stumbled after her, my heart pounding.

For the next week, things were off. Momo refused to go near that side of the compound, and she would whine at night, staring at the wall. I began to have nightmares – dreams of a figure, tall and thin, with long arms that reached for me. I woke up with scratches on my arms that I couldn’t explain. The air in my room felt heavy, and I often heard a faint whispering, like leaves rustling, coming from the vents.

Then, one night, I woke to find Momo standing at my bedroom door, growling. The door was slightly ajar, and I could see a shadow moving in the hallway. It wasn’t human – its limbs were too long, its body too skewed. I froze, and Momo lunged forward, barking fiercely. The shadow recoiled, and I heard a sound like dry branches breaking. I slammed the door shut and held it until morning.

The next day, I decided to investigate the tree. I found it at the edge of the forest, its bark covered in strange carvings – symbols I didn’t recognize. There were offerings beneath it: small dolls, coins, and what looked like dried fruit. A cold wind stirred the leaves, and I felt a presence, as if the tree was watching me. I backed away, realizing that I had to make amends.

I returned the following night with a small offering of sake and a bowl of rice, hoping to appease the spirit. As I placed them at the base of the tree, I whispered an apology. The air warmed slightly, and the oppressive feeling lifted. Momo, who had been cowering behind me, stepped forward and sniffed the offering. She then looked up at me, and for the first time in days, her tail wagged.

But as we turned to leave, I noticed something in the underbrush – a small, gray stone, smooth and oddly warm. I picked it up, and a chilling realization hit me: the stone resembled a tiny, fossilized figure, curled in a fetal position. I dropped it and ran, Momo at my heels.

That night, I packed my things and left the outpost, but the nightmares persisted. I now carry that stone with me, a constant reminder of what happened – and a warning that some offerings, once made, can never be taken back.
