My grandmother told me this tale when I was young. She said when she was a teenager, she walked home from school every day with her two best friends, Clara and Rosa. They lived on the same street and had walked together since they were children, finding comfort and safety in their little group.

One afternoon, as they strolled down their familiar path, my grandmother happened to glance at the ground. She was walking between her two friends. She looked at Clara’s shadow, then at her own, and finally at Rosa’s. Her heart jumped. Rosa’s shadow was wrong. It was just a dark shape on the pavement, but it was completely missing its head.

She stared, unable to understand what she was seeing. The other two girls were chatting, unaware. My grandmother finally found her voice and pointed it out, her hand trembling. They all stopped and looked down at the ground where Rosa’s headless shadow lay.
