The air in Wrenwood Manor hung heavy and still, thick with the scent of decaying lilies and something else, something metallic and sharp that pricked at the back of Elias’s throat. He’d arrived only three days prior, a reluctant guest at the insistence of his old university roommate, Julian. Julian had inherited the sprawling, gothic estate from a distant aunt he’d never met, a woman whose eccentricity was whispered about even in the hushed tones of the local village. From the moment Elias stepped across the threshold, a profound sense of dread had settled upon him, a chilling premonition that he was an intruder in a place that held its breath, waiting.

He tried to dismiss it as the oppressive atmosphere of an old, neglected house. Dust motes danced in the shafts of weak sunlight that pierced the grimy panes of the leaded windows, illuminating faded tapestries depicting grim hunting scenes. The silence was profound, broken only by the creaks and groans of the ancient timbers, sounds Elias initially attributed to the wind or settling foundations. Yet, as the days bled into one another, the unease festered, blooming into a constant, low-grade terror. He began to catch glimpses of movement at the periphery of his vision – fleeting shapes that dissolved into the gloom the moment he turned his head. He’d hear faint rustling from empty rooms, like the drag of silken fabric, or a soft, almost imperceptible sigh that seemed to emanate from the very walls.

Julian, oblivious or perhaps willfully ignorant, spent his days poring over dusty ledgers in the library, his nights lost in a haze of cheap brandy. He left Elias to his own devices, a decision that would prove calamitous. It was on the fifth night, a particularly suffocating evening with no moon and a complete absence of wind, that the true nature of Wrenwood Manor began to reveal itself. Elias found himself in the grand hall, the flickering light of a single candelabra casting long, distorted shadows. A wave of nausea, sudden and violent, washed over him, compelling him towards the nearest bathroom. He stumbled forward, his hand reaching for the ornate brass doorknob, when his progress was arrested. Standing directly before him, blocking the entrance to the lavatory, was a figure. Tall, impossibly thin, and shrouded in what appeared to be tattered, midnight-blue velvet, it offered no discernible features, only an abyss of pure darkness where a face should have been. Elias felt his breath catch, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. Then, as abruptly as it had appeared, the apparition simply… dissolved, melting back into the oppressive darkness of the hallway.

Shaking, Elias backed away, his mind struggling to process what he had seen. Just as he thought he might regain some semblance of control, a rhythmic, jarring sound echoed from the far end of the hall. *Thud. Thud. Thud.* It was the sound of something striking wood, hard and insistent. He cautiously peered around the corner, his eyes widening in horror. Lounging against the grand oak door that led to the estate’s grounds was a man, or what passed for one. His skin was the colour of old parchment, stretched taut over sharp bones. His clothes were rags, and his head, with vacant, staring eyes, was repeatedly slamming against the door, each impact producing a sickening, wet crack. A thin trickle of blood, dark and viscous, ran down his face and onto the polished floor. Elias let out a strangled gasp, a sound that was swallowed by the oppressive silence of Wrenwood Manor. The world spun, the grotesque tableau before him dissolving into blackness as he lost consciousness.
