y grandmother told me this story when I was young. She didn’t like to talk about ghosts, but this was different. She said it happened when she was expecting my uncle, and no matter how much time passed, she never forgot it.

It was years ago, back when she and my grandfather moved to a small town for his new job. They didn’t have much—just a tiny house, barely furnished. Grandpa worked long shifts, sometimes staying out late, and Grandma was often alone.

Not long after she became pregnant, she started feeling strange. Not sick—just watched. No matter where she was in the house, she felt eyes on her. At first, she blamed her nerves, but then the dreams started. In them, she was lying in a hospital bed, weak and cold. A shadow stood at the foot of the bed, whispering something she couldn’t understand. She always woke up before she could see its face.

By the time she was seven months along, things got worse. She had trouble moving, her body felt heavy, and she kept seeing things out of the corner of her eye—a shape in the doorway, a shadow slipping past the hall. Doctors checked her, but everything seemed fine. They told her it was just the stress of pregnancy.

When the baby finally arrived, she felt relief—but it didn’t last. That first night in the hospital, she woke up feeling ice-cold. The room was dark except for the faint glow from the hallway. She tried to sit up, but she was too weak. Then, she felt a soft hand stroking her hair.

A voice whispered, “Rest, I’ll take care of him.”

It was a voice she knew.

When she opened her eyes, she was alone, but her baby was sleeping soundly in the crib beside her. At that moment, the door burst open, and a doctor rushed in.

“Do you know what day it is?” he asked urgently.

She was confused, dizzy. The doctor told her she had a serious infection. They almost lost her. The only reason they found out in time was because her room light had turned on by itself—except that was impossible. The switch was broken.

Grandma didn’t say much after that, just that she knew who had been with her that night. Her older brother had died years before she was born, but she had seen his picture.

And the voice that whispered to her? It was his.
