The old greenhouse stood at the edge of Blackwood Estate, a skeletal ruin against the bruised twilight. Elias, the new groundskeeper, had been warned by the estate manager, a man whose eyes seemed perpetually shadowed, to steer clear of it after sundown. “Bad for the nerves, that place,” he’d rasped, his breath smelling faintly of soil and something acrid. Elias, a man who believed more in compost than curses, dismissed it as the ramblings of a superstitious old timer. He was wrong.

It began subtly. A faint, sweet smell, like overripe jasmine, that clung to the air near the greenhouse, even on the chilliest nights. Then came the sounds: a low, guttural humming, as if the very earth beneath the structure was sighing. Elias, tending to the rose bushes bordering the property line one evening, heard it clearly. It was a wet, rasping sound, like a thousand tiny roots being pulled from damp soil, accompanied by a faint, rhythmic thudding. He peered through the grimy glass panes of the greenhouse, his breath misting the cold surface.

Inside, the air was thick and cloying. Moonlight, filtering through the broken panes, illuminated rows of withered, skeletal plants. But it wasn’t the dead flora that held Elias captive. In the deepest corner, where the shadows congealed like spilled ink, something moved. It was a shape, hunched and amorphous, tending to what looked like a vast, pulsating mound of decaying leaves and dark earth. As Elias watched, a single, impossibly long, twig-like finger emerged from the mass, stroking a bloom that seemed to unfurl from the decay, a sickly, phosphorescent white.

The figure slowly turned, and Elias felt a jolt of primal terror. It had no discernible face, only a dark, gaping aperture where one should be. But from this void, a sound emerged, not a voice, but a series of clicks and pops, like seeds bursting in dry heat. And then, it smiled. It wasn’t a human smile; it was a stretch of the darkness, a widening of the void, revealing rows of tiny, needle-sharp roots where teeth should have been. The smile stretched, impossibly wide, and Elias knew, with chilling certainty, that the plants within the greenhouse were not merely dying. They were being *fed*. He stumbled backward, the smell of overripe jasmine suddenly overwhelming, tasting like rot and grave dirt on his tongue. The rhythmic thudding grew louder, a morbid heartbeat echoing from the decaying heart of the Blackwood Estate.
