My friend Clara had an elderly dog named Rusty for almost fifteen years. He was a large, gentle animal who had always been heavy, no matter what food he ate or how much he exercised. Last month, a new veterinarian did a special scan and found several growths near his lungs, along with a lot of fluid. The vet said the condition was very rare and had progressed too far for any treatment to have worked.
Clara made the difficult choice to let Rusty go. Every evening, she would go into her garden and place his favorite chew toy on the small mound of earth marking his resting place. I went to her house for a visit about a week later. The night was quiet and we talked about old times.
The next afternoon, we went to the animal shelter just to look at the puppies. Clara was quiet, looking at all the hopeful faces. After a long time of thinking it over, she pointed to a small, timid pup with warm eyes.
