The bedside clock glowed 4:10 AM, its red digits slicing through the darkness like wounds. I blinked, my eyes gritty from sleep, and wondered what had roused me. A chill crept along my spine, settling into the small of my back like a cold hand. I reached for the blanket, but it lay pooled at my feet. Groaning, I rolled to my side to tug it up, but my body refused to budge, as if an invisible weight pressed me into the mattress.

A soft exhale brushed my ear, warm and yet chilling. I froze, my heart hammering. This was not the usual whisper of my old house’s quirks. No, this was something else—something that had never dared to touch me. I tried to roll again, but I collided with a solid presence, a body that shouldn’t be there. The cold intensified, seeping through my pajamas, and I shivered violently.

My mind raced. The house had its share of peculiarities—creaking floors, a drafty hallway, the occasional flicker of a light. But this was different. This was a weight, a breath, a living thing sharing my bed. I tried to scream, but my voice failed, trapped in my throat. I fought to free my arm, muscles straining, until at last it broke free.

I tilted my head, my eyes adjusting to the gloom. At the foot of the bed, a figure stood—a girl, perhaps a few years older than me, her hair hanging in lank strands over a pale face. She was not there a moment before. Her eyes were black, like voids, and they fixed on me with an ancient hunger. The cold that had been at my back now surged from her, filling the room, making my breath mist.

She raised a finger to her lips, a gesture of silence, and I felt the words die in my throat. Then she whispered, ‘You see me.’ Her voice was like rustling leaves, dry and brittle. I shook my head, but she smiled, a slow, deliberate curve that revealed too many teeth. ‘Good,’ she said. ‘Now you can join me.’ The last thing I saw was her reaching out, her fingers stretching impossibly long, and then the cold turned to ice, and everything went black.

When I woke, the clock read 4:10 AM again. I lay there, drenched in sweat, my heart pounding. The room was still, silent. But then I heard it—a soft breath beside me, and a weight pressing down on my chest. I turned my head, and there she was, lying next to me, her black eyes open, boring into mine. ‘It’s always 4:10 now,’ she said. ‘For us.’ I tried to move, but I was pinned again, and I knew, with a sinking horror, that I would never see another time again.
