The Forgotten Child

In the summer of 1990, Clara and her husband Mark moved into a quaint old house that had been divided into two homes. Clara’s mother-in-law resided in the upper unit, while Clara and Mark occupied the lower one. It was a typical Saturday afternoon when Clara decided to tackle the laundry. As she descended the creaky stairs to the basement, a chilling sound caught her attention—soft sobs echoing in the shadows.

Feeling a mix of fear and curiosity, Clara hesitated but then called out, “Hello? Who’s there?” A small voice replied, “I’m scared down here!” Clara’s heart raced as she stepped further into the dim light. “What are you scared of?” she asked gently. The boy’s voice trembled as he said, “I don’t like being alone in the dark!”

Determined to help, Clara promised, “I’ll bring you a light!” She hurried back upstairs, her mind racing. After rummaging through the drawers, she found an old lamp and replaced the bulb. With a deep breath, she descended once more, eager to comfort the child. But as she plugged in the lamp, the sobs ceased suddenly, and the room fell silent.

Clara looked around, confused. The boy was gone. As she turned to leave, she caught sight of an old photograph hanging on the wall, depicting a family that once lived in the house. Among them was a little boy, his eyes filled with a haunting sadness. Later that evening, Clara learned from her mother-in-law that many years prior, a tragic event had taken the boy’s life, leaving behind an empty space that never truly healed. She gazed at the photograph again, a sense of understanding washing over her. The child was still seeking comfort, just as she had promised.
