In the summer of 2014, my family and I flew to Romania to visit relatives in the Transylvanian countryside. We stayed at my great-uncle’s old farmhouse, a sprawling building with creaky wooden floors and a labyrinth of rooms. My older brother, Andrei, and I were given a room on the ground floor, while everyone else slept upstairs. The first week was peaceful, but then we started hearing things at night: soft footsteps in the hallway, the faint rustle of papers, and the distinct sound of drawers sliding open and shut in the adjacent study. We were too terrified to investigate, and when we mentioned it to the others, they dismissed it as old house noises.

One Saturday night, our cousins from Bucharest joined us, and all the kids decided to camp out in our room on the ground floor. It was around 11 PM when my younger brother, Mihai, and one of the cousins kept darting in and out of the room, giggling. I told them to settle down and go to sleep. Mihai obediently crawled into his sleeping bag, but the cousin, Stefan, stood frozen in the doorway, staring into the pitch-black hallway as if someone were there. I called his name, but he didn’t respond. I got up and walked over to him, and as I approached, he whispered, ‘There’s a man in the hallway. He’s holding a map.’

I saw nothing but darkness, but Stefan’s face was pale. I pulled him back into our room and closed the door, but the door slowly creaked open again, and we all heard a low, guttural voice say, ‘Don’t fold the map.’ We froze. Then the sound of paper crumpling, and a faint rustle like someone unfolding a large sheet. We huddled together in the corner, too scared to move, until the sun rose.

The next day, we told the adults, but they just laughed and said Stefan had a vivid imagination. However, my great-uncle’s face went ashen. He took me aside and revealed a family secret: the house was built on the site of an old inn where a traveling cartographer was murdered in 1847. His most prized possession was a map of the area that supposedly held the location of a hidden treasure. The murderer took the map, but it was never found. Ever since, the cartographer’s ghost has been searching for his map, and anyone who folds a paper map in the house is tormented.

That evening, I searched the study and found an antique map drawer. In it, a crinkled, torn map. I carefully unfolded it—it was a map of the surrounding hills, with a red X near a cave. But as I studied it, I heard the haunting voice again: ‘Do not fold it. Reveal the path.’ I realized the ghost wanted the map to be followed. Against better judgment, I convinced the boys to explore the cave the next day.

We hiked to the cave, clutching the map. Inside, we found a small wooden chest. But as we opened it, we discovered not gold, but a stack of blank paper and a quill. Then the ghost appeared, a translucent figure with hollow eyes. ‘You found my map and my tools,’ he rasped. ‘Now you must finish my work. Map the new boundary of my grave.’ He pointed to a spot on the ground. We hastily drew a crude map on one of the pages, and as we finished, the ghost smiled and dissolved into the air.

Back at the house, we returned the map to the drawer. But that night, we heard a new sound: scratching, as if someone were drawing. We crept to the study and saw the ghost again, now more solid, hunched over the desk, drawing on a fresh map. He looked up at us and said, ‘Thank you. Now I can rest. But beware: this house is now a gateway. Folding any map will release me again.’ And with that, he vanished.

We never spoke of it again, and we threw away all the maps we owned. But sometimes, when I open a drawer, I see a fold in a piece of paper, and I hear a faint whisper: ‘Don’t fold the map.’
