I was seven years old, and our small house felt very full. My older sister slept on the high bed above me, and our parents were across the room. My own bed was right under the big window that looked out into the dark yard.

One morning, long before the sun came up, I woke suddenly. The room was completely dark and silent except for the soft sound of falling rain. I turned in my bed, looking at the shapes in the room. Then I looked at the window.

My breath caught in my chest. A face was pressed against the glass. It was a man, but I could not see him clearly in the dark. His eyes were wide and his expression was not kind. He was just looking in, directly at me.

I was too scared to make a sound. I quickly slid down and pulled my blanket over my head, making a small space to look out. The face was still there, watching. I looked desperately at my parents, sleeping peacefully, and hoped the man would go away.
