I never thought I’d be writing this, but I need to know if anyone else has felt it. My name is not important, but my story might be. I live in a century-old farmhouse on the outskirts of Maplewood, a place that has always felt too quiet, too still. The house has a history, they say, but I never believed in ghosts. Not until the night I felt something walking on my bed.

It started about a month after I moved in. I was lying in bed, reading, when I felt a distinct pressure on the corner of the mattress, as if a small animal had jumped up. I froze, listening. No jingle of a collar, no purr, no sound at all. Then came the rhythmic pressing of tiny paws against my comforter, kneading the fabric like a cat settling in. My heart hammered. I have no pets. The house was empty.

I reached out, flicked on the lamp, and found nothing. The comforter was smooth, no indentation. I told myself it was a draft, a figment of exhaustion. But it happened every night for weeks. The same weight, the same kneading, always on the left side of the bed, always at the exact same spot. I started sleeping with the light on, but it didn’t stop. I even set up a camera, but the footage showed nothing—just me tossing and turning, and the sheets shifting as if moved by an unseen force.

Then, as suddenly as it started, it stopped. For two years, nothing. I convinced myself I had been overworked, my mind playing tricks on me. But last week, it returned. This time, however, it was different. The kneading was more intense, and I felt a cold draft wrap around my ankles. I looked down, and the comforter was pulled tight, as if something was standing on it. Then I felt a sharp pinch on my big toe, like a bite. I yelped and yanked my foot away, but nothing was there.

I have a son now, two years old, and he’s started sleepwalking. The other night, I found him standing at the foot of my bed, staring at the wall. When I asked him what he was doing, he said, ‘The cat wants to play.’ But there is no cat. When I asked what cat, he pointed to the corner of the room, where the darkness seemed to pool. I didn’t sleep that night.

Now, I’m writing this because I need to know if anyone else has experienced this. Perhaps it’s a residual haunting, a memory of a pet long gone. Or perhaps it’s something else, something that has found a home in this old house. I’ve started to hear soft purring at night, coming from under the bed. But when I look, there’s nothing. Only the shadows, and the sense that I am not alone.

If you have felt this, please tell me. I need to know I’m not going mad. But be careful—whatever it is, it’s getting bolder. Last night, I woke to find my son’s hand reaching under the bed, and he was smiling. I grabbed him, and he whispered, ‘She’s coming.’ I don’t know who ‘she’ is. But I’m afraid to find out.
