The Elevator Calls

My father passed away just a few days ago. He had been sick for a long time, and in the end, he could barely eat or drink. It was painful to watch. Since then, strange things have been happening to me.

Yesterday, I was in the elevator. I pressed my floor button and stepped back, as I always do. But before the elevator started moving, the emergency call button lit up. It rang three times, then there was only static before it disconnected. I figured it was a malfunction and ignored it.

But today, it happened again. Not once, but three times. Each time, I was the only one in the elevator. I was careful not to touch any other buttons, yet the emergency call would activate on its own. I told the building management. Maybe it was a wiring problem, or water had leaked into the system from the recent storm.

Still, something in me felt uneasy. I kept thinking about my father. Could it be him trying to reach me? Or was it just my mind playing tricks on me? I don’t know, but I can’t shake the feeling that someone—something—is trying to make contact.
