I never thought much about the crawlspace under the gym bleachers at Millbrook High. It was just a dark, musty gap where dust bunnies bred and forgotten dodgeballs went to die. But after what I saw, I can’t even walk past the gym without my skin crawling.

It started during my junior year, when I had to take a second semester of PE to make up for a failed credit. I’m not the most organized person—my locker was a chaotic mess of crumpled clothes and sticky deodorant sticks. One Tuesday, I finished my laps early and headed back to the locker room alone. The hallways were empty, the thud of my sneakers echoing off the tiles. I pushed open the heavy door, and the cool air hit me like a welcome relief.

I was alone. I could feel it—the stillness of the room, the faint smell of sweat and bleach. I opened my locker, my combination clicks loud in the silence, and grabbed my towel. That’s when I heard it: the soft creak of the locker room door swinging open. I called out, ‘Hello?’ but no one answered. I figured it was just a draft, so I ignored it. But the creak came again, and then the unmistakable sound of footsteps—slow, deliberate, padding across the tiles. I froze, my heart hammering. ‘Who’s there?’ I said, but the only response was the echoes of my own voice.

I peeked around the corner. The room was empty. But the door was still swaying, as if someone had just walked through. I told myself it was the wind, but there was no wind inside. I grabbed my stuff and tried to leave, but the door wouldn’t budge. It was like something was pushing against it from the other side. I shoved harder, and it finally gave way, but I felt a cold hand brush my neck as I stumbled into the hallway. I turned, but no one was there.

I thought that was the end of it, but a week later, I had to retrieve my forgotten phone from the gym after practice. The sun was setting, painting the court in orange shadows. I walked in and saw my phone on the bleachers, but as I bent to pick it up, I noticed something under the bottom row—a dark opening I’d never seen before. It was a crawlspace, just big enough for a person to squeeze into. I knelt down, curiosity getting the better of me, and peered inside. It was pitch black, but I could hear a faint scratching, like nails on concrete.

I should have run, but I didn’t. I crawled in, my heart pounding in my ears. The space was tight, the air thick with dust. I inched forward, feeling the cold floor, and then my hand touched something soft. I recoiled, but I couldn’t see what it was. I pulled out my phone and turned on the flashlight. There, in the dim glow, I saw a pile of old PE uniforms, all crumpled and stained with something dark. And among them, a pair of shoes—white, scuffed, and laced perfectly. They looked just like the ones I had on.

I scrambled backwards, but the opening had closed. I was trapped. The scratching grew louder, and I felt a presence behind me, breathing on my neck. I screamed, but no sound came out. Then, in the flashlight’s beam, I saw a figure crawling toward me—a pale, emaciated thing with hollow eyes and a gaping mouth. It wore the same shoes I owned, but they were tied together with a shriveled piece of rope. It stopped inches from my face and whispered, ‘Why did you come?’

I woke up outside the gym, my backpack on my chest, the sun fully set. The crawlspace entrance was gone, replaced by solid concrete. But when I got home, I found a note in my pocket, written in my own handwriting: ‘You left your shoes under the bleachers. Come get them.’ I haven’t been back to that gym since. And every night, I hear scratching under my bed, asking the same question.
