When I was six, my aunt gave me an old doll she found at a thrift store. It had glassy eyes and a stitched smile, and I loved it right away. I named her Lila and took her everywhere with me.

For a while, everything was normal. But after a few months, strange things started happening. When I played with Lila, I would hear whispers, but no one else was around. At first, I thought I was imagining it, so I ignored the sounds. Then, after my seventh birthday, the whispers came back—louder.

One afternoon, my friend Emma came over, and we played house in the extra room. We decided Lila would be the “naughty” child, and we put her in the corner as punishment. We left the room for a few minutes, giggling about our game. But when we returned, Lila was no longer facing the wall. She was turned toward the door, staring right at us.

Emma screamed, and we ran out of the room. I refused to touch Lila again. At our next yard sale, my mom sold the doll to a collector. Even now, I wonder what really happened that day. And sometimes, I still hear whispers when I’m alone.
