It was a quiet Tuesday in late October when it first occurred. I was in the backyard with my cat, Mittens, enjoying the afternoon sun. My music player had just gone silent between songs when I heard the distinct sound of the side gate swinging shut.

Mittens perked up, her back arching. I assumed my older brother had come home early from work. But then I remembered I had promised to water the plants and hadn’t done it yet. A flicker of worry made me peer around the corner of the house to the driveway where his motorcycle was always parked. The space was empty.

My heart jumped. Someone was in the yard. Both the gate and the shed were supposed to be locked. I picked up a sturdy garden trowel from a flowerbed and pushed the back door open. I called out, my voice firm, “You should leave now. I’m calling for help.”

I repeated this as I walked through the quiet kitchen and into the living room. Everything seemed still. When I reached the side entrance, I found the main door was shut, but the thin outer screen was unlatched, swaying gently in the breeze.
