In the still, sweltering July of 2017, I lay awake in my attic bedroom, the ceiling fan churning uselessly above me. The heat was a thick, wet blanket, and my skin was slick with sweat. Sleep was a distant memory. I finally threw off the covers and padded downstairs to the living room, where the old leather couch promised a cooler sanctuary. I tossed and turned for what felt like an hour, but at last, the heaviness of the night pulled me under.

At 3:15, I was thrust back into consciousness, my heart hammering for no reason. I lay still, listening to the hum of the refrigerator and the occasional creak of the old house settling. But then, a new sound sliced through the silence: a crinkle, then a crunch. It came from the kitchen, distinct and unmistakable. The sound of a hand rummaging inside a plastic bag, then the crisp, wet crunch of a chip being crushed between teeth.

I held my breath, my mind racing. My partner, Lena, was asleep upstairs, and our dog, Cooper, was snoring at my feet. The kids were away at camp. No one should have been in the kitchen. But the sound persisted, rhythmic and deliberate—a bag being opened, chips being taken out one by one, each crunch echoing through the empty house like a mockery of hunger.

I rose from the couch, careful not to make a sound, and crept toward the kitchen doorway. The light was off, but the pale glow of the moon cast silver rectangles on the linoleum floor. The sound was coming from the pantry. I flicked on the overhead light, and the noise stopped abruptly. The pantry door was slightly ajar, and inside, I could see the bag of sea salt chips on the shelf, untouched, unopened.

I told myself it was a figment of my imagination, a trick of the heat, but a cold dread coiled in my stomach. I retreated to the couch, but I couldn’t sleep. The next night, the same thing happened: the same crinkle, the same crunch, at exactly 3:15. This time, I stayed on the couch, listening, my skin prickling. The sound lasted for minutes, a private meal for an unseen guest.

Night after night, it returned. I began to wonder if it was the ghost of the previous owners, the reclusive widow who had died in the kitchen a decade ago. I researched the house’s history, but found nothing. The sounds grew more intimate—I could hear fingers sliding along the bag, the subtle crackle of a single chip being broken, the slow, savoring chomp. It was as if whoever was there was reveling in the sound, performing for me.

One night, I decided to confront it. I armed myself with a flashlight and crept into the kitchen at 3:14. I stood in the doorway, letting my eyes adjust. The sound began exactly on time, from the pantry. I yanked the door open, shining the light inside. The bag of chips was there, but as I watched, the bag began to crinkle on its own, and a chip lifted from the opening, as if held by invisible fingers, then bit into the air, the crunch echoing in the small space.

I backed away, my heart pounding, and ran to the bedroom, waking Lena. She tried to soothe me, but I couldn’t shake the image of the chip being chewed by nothing. The next day, we moved to a hotel, and after we returned, the sounds were gone. But I still jump at the sound of a bag being opened, and I know, deep down, that whatever was there is still waiting, patient, for another hot summer night when I’ll be fooled into coming down for a drink of water, and the crunching will begin again, a reminder that some hungers are never satisfied.”: “
