The air in the old barn hung thick and still, heavy with the scent of decaying hay and something else… something metallic and sharp. Elias stumbled in, the late afternoon sun slanting through the grimy window panes, painting stripes of dust motes dancing in the stagnant air. He’d been working the fields since dawn, his muscles screaming in protest, but a gnawing unease had driven him from the repetitive rhythm of the harvest.

He collapsed onto a pile of burlap sacks, his breath catching in his throat. It wasn’t fatigue that gripped him, but a sudden, suffocating tide of malevolence. It bloomed in his chest, a venomous flower unfurling its petals, whispering dark temptations. He felt a foreign presence coil within him, a parasitic entity that savored his exhaustion and twisted it into something monstrous. Rage, cold and sharp, pierced through his weariness. He was no longer Elias, the simple farmer. He was a vessel, brimming with a power that felt both ancient and utterly corrupt.

With a guttural cry that was not entirely his own, he lurched to his feet. His left leg, strangely invigorated, propelled him forward, bounding down the creaking wooden steps of the hayloft in impossibly long strides. He felt an unnatural strength coursing through him, a defiance of gravity and pain. The world blurred around him, the familiar textures of the barn walls smearing into streaks of brown and grey.

He found himself before a warped, cobweb-draped mirror leaning against a workbench. His reflection stared back, a stranger with eyes that burned with an infernal, crimson light. The rage intensified, demanding an outlet. He pushed past it, not breaking stride, and flung open the door to the small, attached tack room. Inside, his wife, Clara, was mending a bridle, her back to him. He stalked towards her, his newfound, terrifying purpose unspooling with each thudding step. The dream, or whatever it was, dissolved just as his shadow fell upon her.
