When my friends, Lena and Marcus, moved into their first apartment together, the place was mostly bare. The previous tenant had left a few things, but the most prominent was a massive, old-fashioned sofa in the living room. It was upholstered in a deep, musty green, with ornate wooden scrolls on the arms and a sagging middle. We joked that it looked like it had survived the Great Depression, and it probably had. The first night, as we helped them carry boxes up, I noticed a faint, sour smell emanating from the cushions, like old sweat and cheap perfume. But we dismissed it as leftover funk from the previous tenant.

Within days, strange things started happening. If you sat on the couch and let your legs hang over the side, you’d feel a peculiar pressure, like something cold and solid pressing against your shin. When you looked under, nothing was there. Then, you’d try to set a beer or a soda on the armrest, and it would inexplicably topple over, as if a tiny, mischievous hand had pushed it. And then there were the sounds: faint, rhythmic scratchings coming from directly beneath the couch, like nails on wood. Occasionally, a high-pitched, blood-curdling yowl would erupt from underneath, making everyone in the room freeze.

Lena, always the skeptic, tried to laugh it off. ‘It’s just the floorboards settling,’ she’d say. ‘Or mice,’ Marcus added, but his voice lacked conviction. One night, unable to sleep, Lena decided to camp out on the living room floor in her sleeping bag, claiming the couch had a weird vibe. She fell asleep to the usual creaks and groans of an old building. But around 2 AM, she woke to a soft, rhythmic breathing right near her head. It was slow and deep, like a large animal sleeping. She held her breath, listening. She felt a warm, stale breath on her ear, and then, from under the couch, a pair of eyes caught the moonlight—glowing, amber, and unblinking. They were too high to be a cat’s, too large for a rat. And for a frozen moment, they just stared at her. Then, the breathing became a low growl, and the eyes vanished.

Lena scrambled to her feet, dragging her sleeping bag away. She woke Marcus, who was already wide-eyed. They didn’t say a word, but they both knew. The next morning, they told me everything. We decided to flip the couch over to see what was underneath. What we found defied logic: a thin layer of dust, a few stray coins, and a small, blackened hole in the floorboards, about six inches wide. It was too small for any animal we knew. But as we stood there, a cold breeze blew from the hole, carrying with it that same sour smell. And from somewhere deep below, we heard a faint, muffled yowl. Then, the hole began to grow, the wood splintering and cracking, as if something underneath was clawing its way up. We backed away, staring in horror. The couch shuddered, then sank slightly, as if relieved of a great weight.

We’re in a hotel now, that night. But I can’t shake the image of those eyes, and the way the couch seemed to breathe when we left. Marcus is convinced it was a portal to some kind of underworld, but I think it was something worse—a creature that had found a cozy nest in that old upholstery, waiting for the perfect moment to emerge. Now, I find myself constantly checking under my own furniture, listening for that soft, rhythmic breathing, and wondering if, somewhere, a couch is calling out for a new home.
