I was eleven when my parents decided to repaint my bedroom. The fumes were too strong to sleep in, so they set me up in the den on an inflatable mattress. My mother dozed on the couch beside me, her breathing soft and rhythmic. The den was a room we rarely used, filled with old furniture and the smell of dust. That night, the streetlight outside cast odd patterns on the ceiling, and I remember staring at them, trying to find shapes in the shadows.

I must have drifted off because suddenly I felt a strange sensation, like I was floating. My eyes were shut, but I couldn’t move. I was paralyzed with fear, a familiar feeling from when I was a kid and the dark seemed full of monsters. I didn’t dare open my eyes. But then I heard a voice, not from the room, but inside my head, clear and calm. It said, ‘Touch me.’

That voice compelled me to open my eyes. I saw a massive hand made of shadows on the ceiling, its fingers splayed out, palm facing down. It wasn’t threatening, but it was utterly alien. The voice repeated, ‘Touch me,’ and I felt a pull, as if my hand was being lifted against my will. I tried to scream, but no sound came out. My mother was still sleeping, oblivious.

I fought the pull with every ounce of my will. My arm trembled, a cold sweat breaking out on my forehead. The hand on the ceiling seemed to pulse, and I could swear it was waiting for me. The voice was patient, but I sensed that if I touched it, something irreversible would happen. I didn’t know what, but my eleven-year-old instincts screamed danger.

Suddenly, the hand began to descend. It moved slower than molasses, but it was coming closer. I wanted to wake my mother, but I couldn’t speak or move. The shadow hand reached me, hovering inches above my forehead. I squeezed my eyes shut, willing it away. And then I felt a cold, tingling sensation on my forehead, like static electricity. It was there for a second, then gone.

When I opened my eyes again, the ceiling was back to normal, just the streetlight shadows. The voice was gone, and I could move. I shook my mother awake, but she only grumbled and told me to go back to sleep. I couldn’t. I stayed up the rest of the night, staring at the ceiling, expecting the hand to return.

It never did, but I never forgot it. Years later, I told a psychologist about it. She said it might have been a sleep paralysis episode, a common phenomenon. But I know what I saw. And sometimes, in the dead of night, when the shadows on my bedroom ceiling fall just right, I see that hand again, and I still hear that voice whispering, ‘Touch me.’
