It was a chilly evening, four years ago, when I, then five, lay in my bed, the soft glow of the moon filtering through the curtains. My grandmother was in the next room, her gentle snoring filling the house with a sense of comfort. As I drifted into sleep, I heard a soft voice calling my name. Drowsy and curious, I opened my eyes and sat up.
The voice seemed to float through the air, beckoning me to rise. I felt an irresistible pull to follow it. With my heart racing, I slipped out of bed and padded quietly across the plush carpet, my feet barely making a sound. I reached for the doorknob, turning it slowly, and stepped into the dimly lit hallway.
The voice guided me forward, urging me down the long corridor. Each step felt heavy, and shadows danced along the walls, making the space feel alive. I moved toward the staircase, the familiar creaking of the old wood echoing in the stillness. Just as I reached the bottom, the voice fell silent, leaving an unsettling emptiness in the air.
When dawn broke, my grandmother was startled to find me curled up on the living room couch. I told her that I had followed a voice that had called me. She frowned, telling me she had heard nothing and had been sound asleep throughout the night. An uneasy feeling settled in my chest as I realized I had wandered alone, guided by a presence that no one else could see.
That night has lingered in my mind, a haunting memory that I wish I could erase. But even now, every so often, I feel the shadow of that voice, whispering secrets I can never fully understand.
