I’ve always been open to the idea of spirits, but growing up, the guest room in my parents’ house was just a room. My childhood bedroom, where I slept for eighteen years without a single night of unease. It wasn’t until after I moved out and my brother, Marcus, took over that things began to shift. Marcus was never one for the supernatural; he teased me about my ‘overactive imagination’ whenever I mentioned feeling watched in the hallway. Then, one night, he came downstairs, pale as a ghost, and said he saw a dark figure standing in the corner of his room, just watching. My mom, who’s deeply religious, dismissed it as a nightmare. But then she felt a phantom cat brush against her hand as she dozed in that same room. Our real cats were outdoors, and the doors were locked. We tried to rationalize it: a draft, a creak in the floorboards, a stray whisker of a dream. But deep down, I knew the room had become something else.

Last night, Oklahoma got hammered by storms so violent that the streets turned to rivers. My apartment flooded, so I had no choice but to crash at my parents’ place. The only bed was in that room. Marcus had moved out years ago, and the room had been repurposed as a guest room again. I tried to keep a positive mindset, telling myself I was a grown adult, and nothing was going to scare me. I set up my laptop, watched some mindless videos to lull myself, and eventually drifted off.

I woke up to the sound of rain hammering the roof and the wind howling like a wounded animal. The power was out, and the room was pitch black. I fumbled for my phone, but it was dead. The digital clock on the nightstand glowed a faint red: 3:13 AM. Then I felt it—a cold spot near my feet, like a window was open, but the window was sealed shut. The hair on my arms stood up. I tried to dismiss it as a draft, but then the blanket at the foot of the bed pressed down, as if something had sat on the edge. I froze, my heart pounding. I whispered, ‘Who’s there?’ No answer. But the pressure moved, slowly crawling up the bed, as if a large, cold animal was inching toward me. I yanked my legs up, but the pressure followed, pinning my thighs. I could feel a presence hovering over me, and a faint, sulfurous smell filled the air.

I wanted to scream, but my voice was stuck. I remembered my mom’s advice to pray, so I began reciting the Lord’s Prayer in my head. The pressure eased, and the cold receded. I scrambled out of bed and stumbled to the door, fumbling for the knob. When I finally got it open, I ran to my parents’ room and woke them up. My mom took one look at my face and said, ‘It’s the spirit in that room. I knew it would come to you.’ She and my dad came back with me, carrying flashlights and a Bible. The room looked ordinary, but the air was still cold. My mom began to pray aloud, asking whatever was there to leave in the name of Jesus. As she spoke, the temperature slowly normalized, and the oppression lifted. We all stood there, breathless, not saying a word.

Later, my mom told me that when she and my dad first bought the house, the previous owners had mentioned a ‘sadness’ in that room, but they had forgotten about it. She said she had felt a presence there for years but never spoke of it because she didn’t want to frighten us. Now, I can’t sleep in that room again. I’m curled up on the living room couch as I write this, listening to the storm outside. But I can’t shake the feeling that the spirit is not gone. It’s still there, waiting, perhaps for the next person who tries to sleep in that bed. And I’m terrified to think what it might have done if I hadn’t prayed.
