In the autumn of 2018, I rented a small two-story house on the outskirts of a sleepy town in Oregon, nestled against a dense, ancient forest. The house had a peculiar architecture: the front door opened into a compact foyer with a closet to the left and a half-bath to the right. A steep, narrow staircase led up to the main living area, which comprised a combined kitchen and living room, two bedrooms, and a bathroom. At the top of the stairs, a recessed hatch in the ceiling gave access to the attic, a dark, dusty space I had only glanced into once when I moved in and decided it was best left sealed.

I was home alone on a rainy Saturday evening, my roommates away for the weekend. My bedroom was on the ground floor, just off the foyer. I had the door closed, reading a book, when I heard a distinct knock on my door, three sharp raps. My heart skipped. I checked the window facing the street, but the porch was empty, and the neighbors’ cars were all in their driveways. Curious, I cracked the door open and peered down the hall. The foyer was still, the light from the stairwell casting odd shadows. Then, from above, I heard heavy thumping, as if someone were walking across the attic floor, directly over my head. The sound was rhythmic, like deliberate footsteps, and they moved from one end of the house to the other, then stopped.

I grabbed a flashlight and decided to investigate. The attic hatch had no ladder, so I dragged a step stool from the kitchen. Standing on the top step, I pushed the plywood panel up and swung it hinged open. A puff of cold, musty air hit me. I aimed the flashlight beam into the darkness. The attic was mostly bare, with low beams and pink fiberglass insulation scattered like snow. I saw nothing unusual—just boxes and a few forgotten holiday decorations. But then I noticed a small, child-sized rocking chair in the corner, facing the wall, and swaying ever so slightly. I thought I saw a shape, a human form, huddled under a tarp in the far corner, but when I blinked, it was gone. I called out, ‘Hello?’ My voice echoed, and the rocking chair stopped. A chill ran down my spine, and I slammed the hatch shut, locking it with the sliding bolt I hadn’t noticed before.

That night, I couldn’t sleep. I heard scratches coming from the attic, like tiny claws on wood. Then, a voice, barely a whisper, but so clear it seemed to be right in my ear: ‘Let me out.’ I pulled the covers over my head, my heart pounding. The next morning, I told my roommates about the noises. They laughed, said it was just the house settling or squirrels in the attic. They offered to check, but when they opened the hatch, there was nothing there. But they found a strange drawing on the attic floor, scratched into the wood: a spiral pattern, with a single word in the center: ‘AGAIN’.

Over the next week, the incidents escalated. I would hear the knock on my door every night, now with increasing urgency. The thumping from above happened at random hours, sometimes shaking the ceiling. I began to feel a constant, oppressive presence, as if something was watching me. I started leaving the attic hatch open, hoping to diffuse the tension, but instead, it seemed to allow the presence to roam. One night, I woke to find my bedroom door ajar, and the sound of breathing coming from the hallway. I saw a shadowy figure standing at the foot of the stairs, slightly hunched, with its head tilted at an unnatural angle. It pointed a thin finger up toward the attic.

Terrified, I decided to move out. I packed my essentials and slept at a friend’s house for a few days. When I returned to gather the rest of my belongings, I found the attic door wide open, and a cold draft descending. I climbed the stairs, drawn by an inexplicable force. The attic floor was now covered in a fine layer of dust, and in the center, the word ‘AGAIN’ was repeated dozens of times, spiraling outward. In the corner, the rocking chair was rocking, and this time, a small girl sat in it, her back to me. She wore a tattered white dress. She slowly turned her head, and her face was a blank, featureless void. She spoke, but not with a voice—the words formed directly in my mind: ‘You will be my new friend.’

I fled, leaving everything behind. I never returned. But I still hear the knocking at night, wherever I go. And sometimes, in the mirror, I see a child-like silhouette standing just behind my shoulder, waiting.
