Karan had always prided himself on logic. As a final-year mechanical engineering student, he believed every mystery had a rational explanation, every shadow a source of light. So when his friend Priya suggested they take the night bus home after their last exam, he agreed without hesitation, eager to escape the stifling hostel and reach his village in the hills.

The bus was old, its engine coughing like a smoker, and the driver, a gaunt man named Dinesh, spoke little. The only other passengers were a silent old woman wrapped in a faded shawl and a young couple who slept in each other’s arms. Karan dozed off, the hum of the tires a lullaby.

He woke with a start. The bus had stopped. Outside, a thick fog had rolled in, obscuring everything beyond the headlights. Through the windshield, he saw a figure standing in the middle of the road—a woman in a white sari, her face hidden. The driver honked, but she didn’t move. Priya stirred beside him. ‘What’s going on?’ she murmured.

Dinesh cursed under his breath and stepped out. The fog swallowed him instantly. Minutes passed. The old woman began to hum a tuneless melody. The young couple woke up, looking around in confusion. Karan felt a chill that had nothing to do with the weather. He unbuckled his seatbelt and moved to the door, calling out, ‘Driver? Are you there?’ No answer.

The fog pressed against the windows like a living thing. Priya grabbed his arm, her nails digging in. ‘Don’t go out there,’ she whispered. But Karan, ever the skeptic, ignored her. He stepped into the cold, damp air, and the bus vanished behind him in seconds.

The road was a gray ribbon, the fog muffling all sound. He walked, calling for the driver, but his voice seemed to be swallowed. Ahead, he saw the woman from the road, standing still. As he approached, she turned—but she had no face. Just a smooth, blank expanse where her features should have been. Karan stumbled back, heart hammering.

He ran, but the road twisted and turned, and he found himself back at the bus. The woman was now inside, standing in the aisle, her head tilted. The passengers were frozen, eyes wide, not moving. The old woman’s humming grew louder, more frantic. The young couple’s hands were clasped, but their faces were masks of terror. Priya was screaming, but no sound came out.

The faceless woman raised a hand, and the air grew heavy. Karan felt a pressure in his skull, as if his thoughts were being rewritten. He looked down at his hands and saw them aging, the skin wrinkling, the veins darkening. ‘No!’ he shouted, but the sound was wrong, deep and foreign.

He snapped back to a different reality. He was alone on the bus, the engine idling. The fog had cleared, and the sun was rising over the hills. He was sitting in the driver’s seat, his hands gripping the wheel, leathery and old. The bus was filled with dust, and in the rearview mirror, he saw his reflection—weathered, gray, his face etched with decades of waiting.

On the dashboard lay a worn driver’s license. The name read ‘Dinesh.’ Karan tried to remember his own name, but it was slipping, like sand through fingers. He looked out the window, and the road stretched empty into the distance. He knew he would be waiting here for a long time, for the next bus to come, for another soul to take his place.

And somewhere, deep in the hills, a village waited for a boy named Karan who never returned home, and for an old woman who kept humming a tune that no one could place.
