The year was 1992. The grand municipal library of Veridia, a labyrinth of dust motes and forgotten lore, hosted a retrospective on local artisans. Elara, dragged along by her more cultured friend, Kael, found herself adrift in a sea of oil paints and clay. It was then, amidst the hushed reverence of the exhibit, that she saw him. He wore a scholar’s robe, the fabric a deep, faded indigo, cinched at the waist with a thick, knotted cord. Around his neck hung a pendant, a disc of tarnished silver, intricately carved. His scalp was bare, a stark contrast to the wisps of dark hair clinging to his temples.

Elara nudged Kael. “Did you see him? The archivist?” Kael, engrossed in a watercolor landscape, frowned. “Who? I don’t see anyone unusual.”

“Him!” Elara gestured subtly. “The man in the blue robe. He looks like he’s straight out of a medieval manuscript.”

Kael squinted, following her gaze. “Still nothing, Elara. Are you sure?” Elara insisted, a prickle of unease starting to crawl up her spine. She tried to catch the man’s eye, to see his face, but he remained frustratingly distant, his attention fixed on a display of antique maps. He moved with a peculiar stillness, his movements fluid yet detached, as if gliding rather than walking.

Compelled by an inexplicable curiosity, Elara broke away from Kael and followed the robed figure. She had never encountered anyone dressed in such an anachronistic fashion, and the air around him seemed to hum with a silence that defied the library’s usual murmur. He turned towards a less frequented wing, a section marked ‘Restricted Archives – Staff Only.’ The doorway was framed by imposing oak doors, slightly ajar, revealing a sliver of impenetrable darkness within.

Elara hesitated for only a moment before stepping through. The air inside was significantly colder, thick with the scent of decaying paper and something else, something metallic and sharp. She heard Kael’s voice, distant and strained, calling her name from the main hall. But Elara was focused on the retreating figure, now disappearing behind a towering shelf laden with brittle, leather-bound volumes. As she rounded the corner, the oak doors slammed shut behind her with a resonant boom, plunging her into absolute blackness. The metallic scent intensified, and a low, sibilant sound, like dry leaves skittering across stone, began to fill the void. She was alone, trapped with the unseen keeper of forgotten secrets.
