My grandfather once told me a story that he swore was true, a tale he’d carried with him since a crisp autumn morning in 1987. He was nineteen then, living in a cramped flat above a bakery in the old town of Krupina, a small city in Slovakia. The scent of fresh bread and yeast was as much a part of the building as its creaking stairs.

That Saturday, he woke with a start. The red digits on his alarm clock glowed 9:50. He blinked, the numbers swimming, and felt a strange heaviness in his limbs. He lay back, and in that instant, he was no longer in his bed. He was hovering near the ceiling, looking down at his own body, a tangled form under the patchwork quilt. His face was slack, peaceful, and he saw his chest rise and fall.

A strange calm washed over him, but it was shattered by a flicker of curiosity. Without thinking, he willed himself forward, and he passed through the bedroom wall as if it were smoke. He found himself on the landing, the familiar floral wallpaper looking oddly muted. He drifted down the stairs, his feet not touching the worn wooden steps, and into the living room. The old pendulum clock on the wall, which he’d always thought of as a silent guardian, showed 9:53. The room was tidy, the sun casting long rectangles on the floor.

He moved toward the kitchen, drawn by the sound of a kettle whistling. There, his father stood at the counter, his back to my grandfather, pouring steaming water into a ceramic mug. His father, a robust man with calloused hands, was dressed in his usual work clothes, a folded newspaper tucked under his arm. My grandfather felt a sudden, irrational fear. ‘If he turns around, he’ll see me,’ he thought. ‘I have to run.’

The thought was barely formed when he was yanked back into his body. He sat bolt upright, gasping. The clock now read 9:54. His heart hammered. He shook his head, trying to dispel the lingering image, and decided he needed to tell someone. He threw on a robe and padded downstairs, the floorboards cold under his bare feet.

In the kitchen, his father was just setting down his mug. He looked up, a hint of surprise on his face. ‘You’re up early for a Saturday,’ he said, his voice gruff but warm. My grandfather opened his mouth, but before he could speak, his father said, ‘You’ll never guess what happened. As I was making my tea, I saw a ghostly figure on the stairs. It looked just like you, floating down. Gave me a right fright for a second.’

My grandfather felt a chill race down his spine. He stood there, mouth agape, as his father shook his head and picked up his newspaper. ‘Must have been a trick of the light, eh?’; he muttered. My grandfather never spoke of it again, but the look in his father’s eyes that morning, a fleeting flash of fear and disbelief, stayed with him forever. He could never explain it, but he knew what he had seen, and he knew his father had seen it too. And the clock has always read 9:54 in that house, ever since.
