It was a chilly Friday night, and I was at O’Malley’s Tavern with my friends, packed into a warm corner booth, laughing and drinking like we always did. The place had an old charm—wooden beams, dim lantern-style lights, and a history no one really talked about.

I was mid-laugh when I felt it. A hand, ice-cold, resting heavy on my shoulder.

A breath—right by my ear.

A whisper.

I couldn’t make out the words, but the voice was urgent, like it was telling me to do something. My chest tightened. My skin prickled. Then—silence. The warmth of the room returned, and I let out a shaky breath. Maybe I imagined it.

Then, ten minutes later—pain.

A sharp, burning sensation on my scalp, as if someone had grabbed a fistful of my hair and yanked. But no one had touched me. My hands flew to my head, but there was nothing there.

Then came the sounds.

Faint, distant screaming. Pleading. Desperate voices, begging for mercy. The noise grew, like it was coming from every direction, filling my head, drowning out the laughter and music of the bar. I squeezed my eyes shut.

And then—silence.

The warmth returned. My hands trembled. I turned to my friends, but they were still talking, drinking, completely unaware. I swallowed hard and forced out, “I—I think I need to go home.”

That night, I couldn’t sleep. The whispers echoed in my ears. The screaming wouldn’t leave my head. So, I did what anyone would do—I searched.

O’Malley’s Tavern used to be a house. A house with a dark past.

In 1674, the owner—a cruel man—was murdered by his own wife. She had suffered years of abuse before she snapped, killing him in the very room where I had been sitting. They say she was caught, dragged from the same corner, and hanged in the street outside.

And when the tavern was remodeled nearly two centuries later, her body was found—buried beneath the floor.

I still go to O’Malley’s. But I never, ever sit in that corner again.

Because I know she’s still there.

And she’s still whispering.
