A few years back, I had a strange experience near my tool shed. I was outside cleaning up, picking up some leaves and twigs when I noticed something lying on the ground near the concrete edge. It looked like an old, dry stick. I wasn’t really paying attention, just reaching down to grab it, when suddenly, it bent into an arch and made a loud cracking sound—like bones snapping. Before I could react, it moved, fast, disappearing under the shed, which is raised on short stilts.
I jumped back, heart racing, and ran to grab a flashlight. When I came back and shined the light underneath, there was nothing. No stick, no movement, nothing at all. It made no sense. After that, I didn’t experience anything unusual for a long time.
But then, two years ago, something else happened. We had a large covered porch swing in the yard, the kind you get from a home store. One day, as I was walking toward it, it suddenly started swinging—hard. It moved three times, back and forth, as if someone had pushed it, then came to a stop. There was no wind, no one else around. I don’t know why, but I acted like I didn’t see it. Maybe I didn’t want to acknowledge whatever was there.
Months passed, and then it happened again. Same swing, same movement—three big swings, then silence. This time, I felt a strange excitement instead of fear. A part of me wanted to believe it was my old neighbor, a kind woman who had passed away years before. Maybe she was letting me know she was still here, watching over the place.
But sometimes, I wonder. We collect a lot of old things—antique furniture, vintage pieces from flea markets. What if something we brought into the house carried a spirit with it? What if it wasn’t my neighbor at all?
