This story isn’t mine, but it happened to my uncle, David, when he was a teenager.

In 1975, his mother, Linda, had been a widow for a few years before she married a man named Robert. They moved into a small house in a quiet town. Nothing special—just a regular three-bedroom home. But Linda still had many things that had belonged to her late husband, William.

One of those things was an old music box from Switzerland. It was beautiful, made of dark wood, with tiny painted flowers on the lid. When you opened it, a small ballerina spun in circles to a soft, sweet tune. William had loved that music box, always keeping it clean and winding it up before bed. Before he passed, he told Linda, “Don’t ever let it stop playing. If you do, I might just come back to check on it.”

At first, Linda and David took turns winding it up. But after a while, life got busy. David was starting at a new school, making friends, and Robert was bringing in new furniture to make the house feel fresh. The music box was placed on a shelf and forgotten.

Then, one night at dinner, the music box started playing. Soft and slow. The problem? No one had touched it. And it hadn’t been wound in months.

At first, they thought it was just a leftover wind from the last time they used it. But the music didn’t stop. Every night, at exactly the same time, it would start playing on its own.

David and Robert took the music box apart, checking the gears, but nothing seemed broken. They even lost the key to wind it up, so they knew no one could have done it by accident. Still, the music continued.

One night, frustrated, Robert shut the box, wrapped it in an old blanket, and put it in a drawer. But at midnight, the tune played again—muffled but clear. Linda started crying, convinced William had come back just like he said he would.

David wasn’t sure what to believe, but he decided to stop the music once and for all. He took out the tiny ballerina, thinking that without it, the music wouldn’t play. Yet, a few hours later, the song played again—only this time, the ballerina was spinning on its own, even though it was no longer attached.

That was the last straw. Linda couldn’t take it anymore. She sold the music box to a neighbor and never spoke of it again.

David always wondered what happened to it. Did the new owner hear the music, too? Or did William leave when the box did?

He never wanted to find out. Some things are better left alone.
