When I was about eight years old, my mother bought a tape voice recorder. This was back when voice recorders required cassette tapes. It was around 7:30 at night, and my family was gathered in the living room. My dad had just gone to take a shower. Being a curious kid, I grabbed the tape recorder and started playing with it, saying silly things and making noises into it.

After recording myself a few times, I rewound the tape to listen to the playback. Everything sounded normal: me being silly, the twins making baby noises, and the faint sound of the TV in the background. Then, near the end of the recording, my sister, being the typical big sister, said, “Will you quit sounding so stupid?” right after she said that, a very deep, gruff voice of an older man asked, “Who are you?” It was the clearest voice on the tape, something that would now be classified as a grade A+ EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon).

Of course, this spooked me. I told everyone in the room what I heard, but they didn’t believe me. I played the recording for my mom and sister. My sister claimed it was me doing the voice, which was impossible since I was only eight. My mom insisted it was my dad and told me to leave it alone. Her tone was unusually forceful.

Just then, my dad walked through the living room. Ignoring my mom’s warning, I asked him, “Dad, did you ask ‘Who are you?’ about five minutes ago?” He responded, “Why would I ask that? I just got out of the shower.” My mom got mad and told me to stop again.

Unfortunately, that tape is lost to time now. At such a young age, I didn’t realize the significance of keeping it. This experience sparked my deep interest in ghosts and the paranormal.

Years later, I learned that my mom had experiences in that house before I was born that left her traumatized, which is why she told me to leave it alone. I plan to ask her if it’s okay to share those stories.
