In 1972’s unsettling horror ‘The Fiend,’ a religious cult called the Brethren preys upon the vulnerable widow Birdy, manipulating her already fragile son, Kenny, into a nightmarish descent into madness. As Kenny’s twisted faith consumes him, his violent urges surface, turning him into a predator who stalks and kills women he deems sinful. The film masterfully builds tension as the line between religious fervor and psychotic obsession blurs, and no woman in the community is safe from his righteous slaughter. With its eerie atmosphere and disturbing portrayal of fanaticism, ‘The Fiend’ is a chilling exploration of how faith can be warped into a weapon of terror.
