The Wet Ghost of Route 66

The desert night swallowed the highway whole, a black ribbon winding through the skeletal arms of saguaro cacti. I was a long-haul trucker, and this stretch of Route 66 in Arizona was my nightly haunt. The radio crackled with static, and the hum of my engine was the only companion I had. Then I saw her—a figure in a white dress, thumb raised, standing by the roadside. Her hair was dark and wet, plastered to her face, as if she had just stepped from a river. I slowed, my heart thumping with an inexplicable dread. The air inside my cab turned frigid, my breath misting before me. I pulled over, and she slid into the passenger seat without a word. The cold intensified, seeping into my bones. I glanced at her—her skin was pale, almost translucent, and water dripped from her clothes, forming a puddle on the seat. ‘Where are you headed?’ I asked, my voice trembling. She turned to me, and her eyes were black, devoid of light. ‘Home,’ she whispered, and the sound was like the gurgle of drowned lungs. I drove on, my hands gripping the wheel, but the cold grew unbearable. I looked in the rearview mirror to check the road behind, and there she was—not in the seat beside me, but in the mirror, her face inches from mine, her wet lips parted in a silent scream. I swerved, the truck careening off the road, and I remember the crunch of metal and the shattering of glass. When I woke, the truck was wrapped around a Joshua tree, and the passenger seat was empty, save for a dark, wet stain that evaporated as I watched. The police found no trace of any woman, only my skid marks and my frantic story. They dismissed it as a hallucination, a trick of the desert heat. But I know what I saw. And now, every night, when I close my eyes, I see her in the mirror, and I feel that cold creeping into my soul. She is still out there, waiting for the next driver who dares to stop, to offer a ride to the dead.
