The Voice from the Tomb

In the weeping mist of an April evening, I stood within the iron gates of Père Lachaise, my recorder held like a talisman against the encroaching dark. The stones, worn by a century of rain, glistened with a sickly sheen, and the air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decay. I had come to capture the whispers of the dead, but I found instead a scream—a woman’s voice, raw and desperate, tearing through the silence from a place I could not locate. It echoed between the mausoleums, now here, now there, as if the very ground itself were crying out. I chased it through the alleys of the dead, my footsteps slapping against the wet cobblestones, but the source remained elusive, a phantom in the fog. The legend speaks of a grave robber, buried alive in the last century, his coffin lined with the trinkets of his victims, his final screams unheard. But this was a woman’s voice, and it pleaded for help with a terror that seemed to come from beneath my very feet. I searched until the batteries died, leaving me in the silent embrace of the cemetery, the scream still ringing in my ears, a sound that would follow me home and into my nightmares, forever unanswered.
