One weekend, I stayed over at my friend Ben’s house. His place was old, the kind of house that creaked even when no one was moving. His parents were out of town, so we had the whole place to ourselves. We stayed up late watching movies, laughing, and messing around—until we started hearing strange sounds.

At first, it was just little noises—like soft tapping from the hallway. Then, footsteps. Slow. Heavy. Like someone was walking just outside the bedroom.

I thought maybe Ben’s dog had gotten loose, so I stepped out to check. The hallway was dark, too dark, like the shadows had grown thicker. I stood there, listening. Nothing.

I shook my head, telling myself it was just my imagination, and went back inside. But the second I shut my eyes, the sounds started again. This time, it was running—fast, pounding footsteps racing down the hall. My chest tightened.

I bolted up and shook Ben awake. “Do you hear that?” I whispered.

He listened. The sound had stopped. “You’re just freaking yourself out,” he said sleepily.

Then—BANG!

Something slammed against the bedroom door.

Ben sat up so fast his head nearly hit the wall. We both stared at the door, too scared to breathe.

And then, in a small, shaking voice, he said, “I was gonna tell you earlier… Someone died in this house. Years ago. A man. People say he never left.”

A shiver ran down my spine. I wanted to leave, but where would I go? The clock on the nightstand glowed 3:00 a.m.

I couldn’t take it anymore. I grabbed my things and told Ben I was leaving. He didn’t try to stop me. He just stared at the door, like he knew—like he felt it too.

I ran home, heart pounding the whole way.

I used to think ghosts were just made-up stories. Now, I know better.

Nothing has happened to me since, but I still think about that night. Every time I hear footsteps in an empty room, every time I see a shadow move when no one’s there—I remember.

Because some things don’t stay buried. And some houses never forget.
