In the fall of 2015, I visited my friend Jake’s house in Ohio. Jake’s family had always claimed their house was haunted. When we were kids, about 10 or 12 years ago, Jake and I ventured into his dark, cluttered basement to explore the old antiques and items stored there. We saw some clothes moving near the washer and dryer. Jake thought it was his brother playing a prank, so he grabbed a plastic bat to scare him. But when we got closer, the clothes stopped moving, and no one was there. We freaked out and ran back to the stairs, only to find a large painting blocking our way. We moved it aside and bolted upstairs, terrified. We told his mom, and she believed it was the ghosts in the house. After that, I avoided the basement and rarely visited Jake’s house.
Years passed, and I reconnected with Jake. I started hanging out at his house again, and nothing unusual happened until that September.
One evening, Jake, our friend Val, and I were relaxing in Jake’s room. The room was soothing, with a large fish tank and mellow music playing on the TV. We were talking about ghosts, and Jake brought up the time we saw something in the basement. He mentioned the painting that blocked our way, but I had no memory of it. I must have blocked it out.
A little while later, still in Jake’s room, I started feeling strange. The room seemed to get darker, and I felt like I was falling backward. It was like a shiver up my spine, that moment right before you pass out. I panicked and told Jake and Val that something was wrong. I couldn’t focus, and I felt like I was dying. My friends tried to calm me down, worried I might have a panic attack. Jake told me to close my eyes, and when I did, I saw visions and felt intense emotions. I was freaked out but also curious. Jake thought I was channeling a spirit, but I couldn’t believe it. He insisted I was, and apparently, he was right.
I was a little boy sitting on a wooden dock, surrounded by wooden walls. My feet dangled out the door, and there was a fence-like gate open outward. A little black book with a latch lay just out of reach. It was dangerous to get the book because I could have fallen out, but I felt compelled to retrieve it. Beyond the door was a calm, serene lake, with green stalks and trees that looked pristine.
