Three autumns ago, my wife Mira and I moved into a creaking Victorian on the edge of Blackwood Pines, a dense forest that bordered an old, overgrown cemetery. The locals called it ‘The Hollow Grounds,’ a place where the dead were said to linger. Mira, a folklorist, was fascinated; I, a software engineer, was skeptical. One crisp evening, we decided to explore the cemetery with a digital recorder, hoping to capture some ambient sounds for her research.

We wandered among the moss-covered headstones, the air thick with the smell of damp earth and rotting leaves. Mira began asking questions into the cold air, her voice a soft echo. ‘Is anyone here? Would you like to speak with us?’ For a long while, there was only the rustle of wind through the pines. Then, a guttural, deafening ‘NO!’ erupted from the recorder, followed by a low, rumbling growl that seemed to vibrate through our bones. Startled, we looked around, but the cemetery was empty. Yet, as we hurried back to the car, I caught a fleeting movement between the trees—a tall, dark shape that watched us with an unsettling stillness.

We drove the short distance home, our hearts pounding. As we pulled into our gravel driveway, the windows of the house began to fog from the inside, even though the furnace was off. A heavy, oppressive presence settled over us, making it hard to breathe. We knew, without speaking, that something had followed us. In the following weeks, we tried to ignore it, but the presence lingered. Every time I opened my laptop, a corrupted audio file would appear in my documents folder—the same recording of that terrible ‘NO!’—even after I deleted it multiple times. And in my peripheral vision, I would catch glimpses of a tall, shadowy man standing just out of sight.

Mira and I decided to return to the cemetery to apologize and ask whatever it was to leave us alone. We stood at the same spot, and Mira pleaded, ‘We’re sorry. Please, leave us be.’ The air grew still, and we both felt a chilling release, as if a weight had been lifted. The paranormal activity ceased; the file never reappeared, and the shadows retreated. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that it was just biding its time.

A year later, I was in a near-fatal car accident on a foggy highway. I broke my neck and spent months in a halo brace, a metal frame screwed into my skull to keep my spine immobile. Confined to bed, I was vulnerable and weak. One night, as I lay in the darkness, I felt a familiar chill seep into the room. I turned my head as much as the brace allowed and saw him—the shadow man, now more solid than ever, standing at my bedside. His form was a void of darkness, and yet I could perceive a face, featureless but malevolent. He leaned closer, and I heard a whisper, not through my ears but directly in my mind: ‘You tried to silence me. Now I will be a witness to your end.’

The shadow man remained by my bedside every night after that. Mira tried everything to protect me—burning sage, consulting spiritual guides—but nothing worked. I grew weaker, my recovery stalling as I felt my life force draining away. I realized then that we had been foolish to think we could ignore it. That ‘NO’ was not a refusal to speak, but a warning. And by asking it to leave, we had only drawn its attention. Now, it was patient, waiting for the moment my body would fail, and then it would finally take what it had come for. My only solace is that Mira never sees him. But I do. Every night, he stands there, a silent witness to my slow demise, waiting for the final breath.
