The first hard frost of December had settled over the town like a shroud, and I was grateful for the warmth of my friend’s house. His name was Marcus, and he lived in an old farmhouse that had been in his family for generations. The house creaked and groaned with every gust of wind, but that night it was eerily still. I remember checking my phone at 3:00 AM, the blue light illuminating the unfamiliar room. That’s when I saw it.

At the foot of the bed stood a figure, tall and thin, wrapped in what looked like mildewed bandages that hung loose in places, revealing a glimpse of pale, mummified skin. Its eyes were sunken pits of darkness, but I could feel them staring at me. I blinked, rubbed my eyes, and when I looked again, it was still there, motionless, as if waiting for me to acknowledge its presence. My heart hammered. I tried to nudge Marcus, but my limbs felt heavy, as if weighted by lead.

Finally, I managed to shake him awake. He grumbled, switched on the bedside lamp, and squinted at me. ‘What’s wrong, Leo?’ I pointed toward the corridor, but the figure had vanished. I stammered, ‘I saw something—a ghost, a mummy—standing right there.’ Marcus sighed, rubbed his face, and said, ‘Go back to sleep. You’re seeing things.’ He turned off the light and rolled over.

I couldn’t sleep. My eyes kept drifting to the open doorway, and then I heard a faint sound—a soft rustling, like dry leaves skittering across a floor. It came from the kitchen. Curiosity, or maybe foolishness, compelled me to get up. I crept down the hallway, the floorboards cold under my bare feet. As I entered the kitchen, I saw the window above the sink wide open, the white curtains fluttering in a breeze that smelled of snow and decay. I closed the window quickly, locking it, and scanned the room. Nothing else seemed out of place.

I went back to Marcus. This time I was more insistent. I shook him harder, and he finally sat up, annoyance in his voice. ‘What now?’ I said, ‘The window in the kitchen is open. I closed it. I swear it was shut when we went to bed.’ Marcus frowned, threw off his covers, and followed me to the kitchen. He examined the lock and shrugged. ‘My mom probably left it open,’ he said. ‘Maybe one of us went to the bathroom.’ I told him that was impossible—we’d both been in the room until now. He yawned and said, ‘Look, let’s just go back to sleep. We’ll sort it out in the morning.’

Reluctantly, I followed him back to the bedroom. I didn’t dare close my eyes, but exhaustion finally claimed me just before dawn. When I woke, the morning light was gray and muted. Marcus was already up, sitting on the edge of the bed, his face pale. He held up his phone, showing me the security camera feed from the kitchen. There, at 2:47 AM, a figure—a tall, gaunt shape wrapped in tattered cloth—had climbed out of the kitchen window, pausing for a moment to look back at the camera with hollow eyes. The timestamp matched exactly when I had first seen it.

Neither of us spoke for a long time. Then Marcus whispered, ‘That thing was in my house. My mom’s been saying she feels watched at night. I thought she was just getting old.’ I looked out the window at the barren fields, crusted with frost. Snow began to fall, and in the distance, I could have sworn I saw a tall figure standing at the edge of the tree line, waiting. We didn’t go outside that day. We haven’t gone outside much since. The creature—whatever it was—doesn’t seem in a hurry. It knows we’re in here, and it knows we saw it. And now, every time I close my eyes, I see those dark pits, and I hear that rustling sound, like leaves, or bandages, brushing against the walls of the house. It’s patient. And it’s still waiting.
